First off, talk to a recruiter, they can help, but make sure you understand that they are salesmen. Being national guard means you get to stay close to home. You may still get deployed, but you are guaranteed to get your job back upon returning from depoloyment. The downside is that you dont get the daily training you would in the regular army and the benefits are not as strong. The downside of the regular army is that you can be stationed anywhere that the army needs you, whether it be CONUS or OCONUS (germany/korea/japan), unless you wish to move to another part of the country or world. Just be honest with yourself with what you want from your service. Each have benefits, its your choice as to what you want.

If you want to guarantee your abrupt and quick transfer to the dessert, joint the National Guard. They are the first to go! If you want training and the opportunity to visit various locations, and the possibility of the dessert, then go regularly army. But your chances of going to the dessert first is with the National Guard.

Have you considered the Air Force? They are the best branch of the military! You can have a military career with the greater liklehood of actually living to tell about it!

in the national guard you can still have a regular job or go to school and only serve when you are called up. in the army that is your job. its part time solider or full time soldier thats the difference.

If you want to give the National Guard a fighting chance (hehe), send them up against some local militia group and even then they'll be hard pressed. LOL

Basically, it depends on what you want to do with your life.

The Active Duty force is a full time job where you get pay, medical care and housing benefits.

The National Guard is a part time force where you need to have another full time job to support yourself.
