That would depend on what you want to do...I don't know of any places that allow the use of K-9s for security guards?

Rottweilers are generally too heavy for a female handler in patrol work. When you think about getting a dog for any K-9 type work (from drugs to protection), you should be able to carry it for at least 100 yards in case of emergency. (You should also be able to hold him on the leash with one hand while he's straining on it full force to get to the "bad guy", whether in training or real life situation.)

What you should do is look into breeders and trainers that have been used by your local law enforcement K-9 units. You should be able to find a dog + training package. Just buying a breed randomly from any old breeder generally turns out badly when you're looking for a working dog.

No offense intended, but you sound like an inexperienced handler in this regard, so I would definitely avoid any of the Belgian dogs--Malinois, Tervueren, and Shepherd. A German Shepherd would probably work well.

Rottie can be a good choice, but any of the working dog breeds can do (German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, Dobberman, Etc). I'm in favor of Mals, but they're not the best for first time handlers. Good luck and be patient

I have a retired German Shepard that was a good work dog. He was a duel purpose dog, drugs and takedowns. It isn't about the bread as much as it is about how strong there play drive is, and can they be trained. The play drive is important, because it will naturally keep them motivated to do there job, to get rewarded. Just remember, a "work" dog is a tool, not a pet.

Actually that is a good choice. The best choice would be a Bullmastiff according to petrix.com. See this site for a guide on choosing a security dog:

Hope this helps

first off, great choice int the field. K-9 positions are great because you spend time with the things you love, dogs. Usually, departments have their dogs already their for issue/deployment. In the states, currently, for patrol they are usually German Shepherds and Belgium Malinois. For drugs its usually retreivers and hounds. Rottweilers are used in many south american countries and dobermans overseas in europe. It all depends on your deparment and their preference and standards.

German Shepards are the best dogs for this. They are strong, fast and reliable. They're also fun to play with and can be very loyal. Most police forces in the world use them.
