I am dyslexic and need to keep a dictionary at my side. But I am also a PhD and have written several books. I will never be able to spell, but I allow my other talents to keep me happy.

People learn in lots of different ways--some do better by listening (hearing words spelled out), some visually (reading lists of words), some by doing (writing out words). You may not have found the method that works best for you.
Spelling and reading can be eased by learning some decoding tricks, such as learning "root words". Also, some learners do better with a "phonics" approach (breaking words down by sound) versus a "whole word" approach.
If you are still in school, ask to be tested. You should make sure you don't have physical impairmant (you should make sure your hearing and vision are good). You may have learning disability, but check other causes first.
If you are not in school, check w/ your local library. They have wonderful adult reading programs with one to one tutors. Good luck.

Have you been tested for dyslexia?
Do you have ADH, which would affect your concentration?
Have you had your eyes checked?
Did you have trouble with it in early school years and get ridiculed, which created a mental block? (I know that's very common with math.)
That's all the typical problems I can think of. But in most cities, tutors are available for adults, if you want to work on this.
Good luck to you! Remember, it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of . I can tell by your question that you are not completely illiterate (unable to read at all), and there are many adults who are. Circumstances just arise at some time which affects peoples chances at education, no big deal.
Go for it!

Nothing wrong with you!! To improve reading and spelling, use your index finger to trace each word as you read, if you cannot pronounce a word use a dictionary that shows you how to break the word down and to say it properly. This requires time, patience and practice. You most likely jump at words when you read!! Take care and be patient as patience is a virtue!!!

There is nothing wrong with you, both reading and spelling require practise. The more you practise, the better you get at it.
