the old testament is also known as the hebrew bible, it was written BEFORE Jesus of Nazareth´s birth (around VII BC to some accounts) , who is character of the following Christian New Testament. The terminology OLD and NEW Testaments is of christian origin and use, jews dont call the Old Testament that way but Tanach (Acronym from Tora, Nevihim, Ktuvim, the three text parts), since for the Judaism there is no continuation of the jewish bible.

Wow that's a hard question to answer in a nutshell. Basically, the Old Testament was written about events that happened before Jesus was born to give the Jewish peoples commandments and examples of who God is and how they should live their lives. The New Testament was written after Jesus was born to tell about his life and how he saved the Gentiles (non-Jews), and to tell them how to get to heaven and how He would return to the earth.

The old Testament is the ancient holy book of the Hebrew (Jewish) people.
The New Testament was written after Christ lived as a man, and was mostly written by those who saw him, but not all of it. Paul never met Jesus, for example.

The OT is a lot of history, law, poetry, and more law. It tells us about creation and events afterwards. It tells us how the nation of Israel came to be established. It gives us the Psalms, wonderful prayers written by David, and Proverbs, simple guidelines for life, along with so many other things. The NT also has some history, but it's main purpose is to tell us about the life and purpose of Jesus Christ, and teach us how to live as Christians. God bless!

The old testiment is pre-jesus. The new testiment was NOT written during the time of jesus. the earliest texts were not put into written form untill the year 80CE at the best accounting. At least 50 years after the events they describe.
