Honestly I am a Catholic not a Muslim but I do not understand. If these women are truly content and are following their faiths why does anyone seem to have a problem with it? The majority of Islamic women I have "spoken" to choose it and are proud of it. Why the seeming problem?I have to admire their adherence to their faith and their modesty. We Christians could use a little of both.
Peace Be With You,
Debra

Now you got me< Christ never said for us to hate anyone. I do not want to live in a government ruled by any religion. Which Christian denomination would it be? Why limit ourselves to one?

Amen.
I think the problem is an inability to see it from other people's perspectives.
'I would not want to wear hijab' becomes 'nobody would want to wear hijab'. There is a lot of misinformation about the so-called 'oppressive' nature of Islam - or, to be fair, confusion about the nature of Islam and the nature of governments who purport to be Islamic (it's an ad hominem fallacy to condemn a religion because of its practitioners, and you'll never see me depending the government of Suadi Arabia). These people, I think, make the following leap of logic:
"I don't want to weer hijab"
=
"Nobody in their right mind would want to wear hijab"
=
"They must be pressured into wearing it"
=
"Islam pressures people"
=
"Islam is bad".
Simplistic logic, but there's a lot of that out there, isn't there?

The reason I have a problem with it is the fact that all over the world women are treated like second class citizens. They are forced to be subservient to men who have basically put themselves in the position of master, while his wife is basically a domestic slave.
Cultures that support the hijab are basically repressing women's rights to their detriment. There are dozens of Muslim countries where women are given only the most basic education as a deliberate move to keep them in their place.
These women are victims. Even if they claim to enjoy what they do this is almost a form of Stockholm Syndrome. They have been brainwashed into believing that not dressing in this way is sinful and disgusting. It would be like asking a western woman why they do not dress as a street prostitute. Their entire culture has warped their mind into believing that they have to dress and behave in this manner.
Faith is not the issue here. The issue is that women are denied basic rights, forced to dress and behave in a certain way, and live in a male dominated society in which they must conform or be severely punished.
For any woman to condone this kind of gender repression is deeply sad, and an affront to the countless women who have fought and continue to fight for gender equality in our society.

I love the way I dress as a Muslima. I cover everything except my hands and face (when I am in public mix with men). Anything otherwise would be "oppressive" denying me freedom of religion, and denying me who I am . I wear what I wear, no location, weather is gonna change it. No sympathy needed here, the sympathy is on those who can't bare to see anyone look different to them. Muslims are not the first or last to cover, Nuns cover. Mary (May Allah be please with her) covered and she is one of the most wonderful women ever born. I realize much of the "problem" some have stems from ignorance, intolerance, and anti anything that is Muslim.
Debra, your words are kind coming from a Christian . We need more of you for a better world :)
peace be with you too

I think it's many things--simple bigotry, fear, pity. I personally feel so sorry for strictly hijabi women in this summer heat and hope they've truly made their choice freely. I can't see going to a whole nother country just to keep wearing a symbol of oppression, like a burqa. But I don't feel sorry for women who, say, wear a headscarf with their jeans and choose their tops carefully. And ultimately, all Americans have the right to make choices about their clothing and religious expression anyhow. I think that to say "You can't wear this" is just as oppressive and controlling as to say, "You must wear this."

Everyone should hate Muslims...why because they all hate you and me.
It is written in the book of Islam.
We are the enemy that is how it is written, everyone make no mistake in that you are the enemy to these people.
Sure they’re going to say you're not, they’re not stupid!
If they go around telling you that you'd be pissed!
Their Religion demands that THEY rule the world.
And after they rule the world they are commanded by GOD to KILL all Infidels (you and me).
Yea Yea “but it’s a peaceful religion” Yes, if you are that religion it is!
Other wise it’s not at all!
If we have one Religion to rule the world, let it be Christianity with all it's flaws.

Because they are ignorant of the significance of hijab. If people stopped for 2 minutes to learn that it shows not only faith and modesty but respect we all could have a little more love for each other.

It's true. If people don't want to respect it in a religous sense, atleast embrace it culturally. I am a muslim woman, and I don't wear a scarf, and if I did, the muslim community would barely notice. In main-stream muslim society, it really is a personal thing. Although, the whole burqa thing makes me cringe and want to cry. Burqas are actually AGAINST the religion of Islam. Our religion actually orders that everybody have an identity at all times...and not to be a black anonymous mass.

Perspective.
From our position, we believe in the right of people to choose their own destiny.
When we see women oppressed, we wonder if they are truly "content" with their status.
We find it difficult to accept their answer, as we feel they are brainwashed or under-educated in their decision as to what is out there.
