I'll take a stab at it.

Usually there are 3 motors, A compressor, and two fans. As described above the compressor compresses the refrigerant, and discharges it into a condenser coil, A fan blows air across that coil and cools the refrigerant to a temperature (given the pressure) where it condenses into a liquid. The liquid flows through an orifice into an evaporator coil. Where the liquid now evaporates and absorbs heat. The evaporator coil is on the suction side of the compressor at a much lower pressure and temperature. It sometimes also has a fan on it which cools the air over that coil.

The refrigerant gas is pulled back in to the compressor completing the cycle.

The total power required is the total of the compressor and the two fans. The temperature difference between the hot coil (condenser) and the cold coil ( evaporator) determine the pressure difference and efficiency of the system.

Elerctic power rotates the motors in them.

You compress the gas (one motor), it heats up. You pump it through the outside radiator coil to cool it off a bit, that radiator has a fan driven by another motor.

Then you allow the gas to expand in the inside evaporator coil, which causes it too cool down. Then you use another fan (3d motor) to circulate the air through evaporator.

There's a site HowStuffWorks that will explain better than I can, with full color graphics and all. Enjoy!
