Some wines are made to be drunk as quite soon after they are put on sale.;E.G. Beaujolais, a number of Vin de Table, and Vin de Pays, while others are made to mature, and are considered best after a number of years...Chateau Neuf du Pape, and Chateau Margeaux for example are good for anything up to 16 - 20 years as a rule...If you have an old bottle of wine, check to see if it's valuable before you dring it. If not, then just try it, as long as it hasn't been opened, or "corked", the worst it will do is taste awful, or send you on a rapid excursion to the toilet

I had a taste of 1898 Chateau Mouton Rothchild 30 years ago, it was great, but at $1000. a bottle (then) I don't think I'll be tasting it again.
