To keep from freezing. The helmets of that era were made of fur-lined leather and were only to keep warm. The aircraft had no climate control systems.

Contrary to what most posters have said, those helmets did not have radio systems in them. They were little more than hats.

Kamikaze pilots were not volunteers, they were forced into it by the government. I dont know the answer to your question. That is like asking if snakes get jock itch.

The comms system was in the helmet, so they should receive orders on what ship to hit once they reach the fleet. Also, they needed to survive until they got to the enemy fleet.

They wanted to get to where they were assigned to hit. A helmet increased the odds of getting there.

It was part of the official Japanese Air Force uniform. If they didn't wear them, they'd be suspended from flying duty, or could lose their weekend pass privileges.
