It sounds like she needs to see an attorney and/ or a financial adviser.

Call a few more banks just to make sure. Do you have an attorney friend that you could ask this question to, without cost to you..
If the creditors are asking for a letter, by all means, have ne drawn up. You may also wish to include some proof that your mom does indeed have dementia.. a letter from her doctor.
I think the way creditors are handling things now is beyond their right.. I also think offering credit cards to children is totally wrong as well... etc.
I wish you and your mom all the best in this. Good luck..

It would be terrible and unlawful if they did! often these threats play on old people's insecurities and play on their ignorance to pressure them into doing things that benefit them! The world is a cruel place and they really cannot do this to an 81 year old woman but all banks have their own policies, but you need to keep a record of these threats and look into them - its a common problem these days which has surfaced that old people are 'bullied' out of their homes by people taking advantage of them - the National Health Service did it god damn it! here in England - even when the old people were entitled to full free healthcare they were done out of their homes - do not let this happen to your mother - I suggest if there is any risk the account can be frozen withdraw the money now!
