I have a 17 month old Black Lab (female)) and she is very inquisitive and tends to be over friendly and mischievous alot, with other dogs and people. Could one of you tell me at what age she will calm these tendencies?.

Labradors are, by nature, very high-spirited dogs! They are also energetic dogs, delighted to work and play hard. Unfortunately, it may be some years before she calms down,as is usual with active/high-spirited dogs. They need a lot of exercise. A very intelligent breed that needs much mental stimulation. You will need to work hard to keep her occupied, a bored dog, is a dog in trouble. Labs are known for being destuctive if left alone/bored.Why not put her energies to use in training, she will love the work, play ball games, hide toys she really likes, making her find them.Training and exercise are the key here. Good luck,I hope it works out for you.

The dirty little secret is EXERCISE..active dogs require lots of stimulation and enrichment.. a twice a day 1 or 2 hour walk will go a long way to calming her down...it requires a big commitment and a lifestyle change to accomadate but as a former owner of two AKITA's who had been problems prior to making the changes..I know this works..I walked them from 6-8am on weedays with at least the same from 8-10pm and more on the weekends..they got to expect and enjoy the time outside and as a consequence were much more relaxed around the house. I would run them behind my truck for the first mile off leash and then walk with them for a couple of hours..that first run seemed to really make them happy and they would always behave for me AS LONG AS I KEPT my end of the bargain.
Its not easy but it works good luck

I had a lovely black lab but she had a heart murmur and she was still very active until she died at the age of 8 and she was trained. The same with my 3 year old keeshound , he is not sick but very active and loves going for a walk.

Most dogs reach full maturity around 24 months. But from my experience, labs stay puppies forever! My black lab (male) was just as hyper at 10 years as he was at 10 months!

My last lab 14 about 2 days before he died. My 3 year old? I will let you know when it happens! She gets 1-2 hours walking excercise a day, comes to work with one of us each day, has a ball thrown for her off and on all day, and for at least 30 mins each evening. She is still bouncy but we love her anyway.

I've heard from Lab owners that it's right around 2 years old that they begin to settle down.
