Pickle onion, gherkins, cauliflower, or Branston pickle or any chutney. Or a salad of tomato, iceberg lettuce, grated fresh carrot, Heinz salad cream, prawns, a few cockles, a few French fries to fill you up and for to diversity from just cold food. A little cold salmon, tinned will do. Of course, a nice white wine to wash it down. Champagne would be preferable, but a nice French white would do, even an Australian or Californian would do for a party. Caviar is OK with cheese but a bit common these days. They put that on at all the buffets - try to be original - especially with the variety of cheeses you offer and a good variety of dips too.

Red onion for me, but you can do so much with cheese, one of my favourites, you could beat a few eggs in a bowl, grate some onion into the eggs and mix a nice handful of grated cheese in, put generous spoonfuls on nice thick bread that you have already toasted, then stick it under the grill till it is bubbling and golden, scrummy and a nice supper or have it with beans or spaghetti hoops for tea.

Things that go well with cheese:

- Any kind of fruit, esp. bananas and pineapple
- Dijon Mustard
- Preserved ginger. Not the dry candied ginger, but the pieces in sugar water.
- Walnut halves.

Use your imagination and try things out. The worst thing that can happen is that you don't like it.
