Google the name 'Ted Patrick'. Congress, and the FBI set guidelines to help de-programmers, who were beginning to look a lot like the programmers they were hired to combat. It all boils down to a persons ability to determine right from wrong. (a curse from eden, or a legal definiton of sanity).
If you ask the wonderful people on this site, if it was a sin to crucify Jesus, you will get a lot of innocent answers from people that sound legally, quite insane...

The only difference between a cult and a religion is the number of believers and the social status and influence of those believers. Early christianity was a cult within Judaism, now it is a religion. It's all semantics.
Every discussion I have had on this has reduced to this. Break down all the walls and you end up with, as you say.
"You have to have faith. You won't understand until you believe."
Faith denies reason, and I will not accept anything from anyone on faith. So, it all becomes very, very pointless.
I'm still living in the vain hope that I might be able to persuade some people that faith is abdication of intellectual responsiblity.

The definition of cult:
1 : formal religious veneration : WORSHIP
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator
5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : the object of such devotion c : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion
All religions started as cults. There are no exceptions. If they meet the above requirements then they are cultists. Something to note is that not all cults are bad like media would like you to believe. I admit some are though.
I am an Occultist, its different yet the same. I search through all things looking for the hidden truth. A cultist is someone who believes the whole truth as told by one source imho.
Its your choice what to believe. Cult is a word open to interpretation becuase not enough information is evailable to form a correct study.

Interesting that you asked this question. I just saw the San Francisco Mime Troupe's production of "Godfellas" yesterday, which addressed the separation of church & state issue.
I'm a pagan, and I believe that everyone should be free to follow their own path. Many of my Christian friends also feel that everyone should follow their own conscience regarding their religious beliefs (or lack of).
I think that religion (or even atheism) can quickly turn cult-like when it demands that EVERYONE believe as they believe with no exceptions. Cults operate on mind control, and I've seen it in extremists on both ends of the religious & political spectrums. (Even Alcoholics Anonymous & its spawning of 12-step programs can be considered "cults.")

it doesn't count as a cult until they have to hand over all their money and the leader gets to sleep with all the female members

a cult worship a mere man and lives in one state and does what that man wants you to do. he tells you when to eat, sleep, make love to your spouse, and many woman sleep with that man and have children with him. look at Jim Jones he had everyone drink a drink and they all died. look at Charles Manson, they are still worshiping in jail. people say we as Jehovah Witnesses are a cult, we are not. we worship Jehovah and Jesus Christ his son and we live in 235 lands and live in our own homes. a cult, people are robots, and we are not
