in walmarts case, i think you could take it a step further. rupurt murcoch owns walmart... and myspace....and has access to 100 million viewers on any given night on his television networks.
our fate is regularly manipulated by the likes of people with this much power.
good question.

Walmart may not contol people's fate but it certainly controls our wallet.
For low income families, it is often a choice they make to buy there as you may find cheaper prices there.
Even though I have a low income, I have come to ignore this store. I think it exercises too much control on people.
It's my choice.
Here in Quebec, Canada, Walmart chose to close 2 stores because the employees wanted to join the Union.
Walmart employees have no benifit and the highly paid job (with benifit) is mostly for men.

Not happy about it at all. Walmart is a nightmare. Just walking in that store gives me a headache and I avoid it all costs!
It is over crowded and packed with too many shoppers, shopping for low quality, cheap products that they probably really don't need.
Once in a while purchase is ok. But, I think Walmart is so lucrative, not b/c they offer inexpensive products due to the so called ingenious distribution, high volume concept. But, because, the products are so cheap that when they go bad in three to six months, it is just as cheap to go buy the same thing different version.
If people bought once and bought quality, they would pay the same price in the end.

WalMart and McDonald's don't control everyone's fate...but they might just control the fate of the Earth.
If we continue to chop down thousands of acres of rain forest to create more grazing land so McDonald's can raise more beef and sell us billions of billions of cheap hamburgers, the ecological balance of the planet will be destroyed.
If WalMart continues to dominate the labor markets in both the U.S. and China, low wages will prevail and horrendous working conditions will get worse.
By the way....Rupert Murdoch doesn't own WalMart. -RKO-

I think you have a foolish premise
edit - LOL rupert murdoch doesn't own Wal-Mart, how nutty is that? any public company is owned by its shareholders
buying once is a nice concept, if you have the money to do that; if you don't, you buy what you can get at the time
ever notice how all the Wal-Mart bashers don't work for or shop at Wal-Mart? they're all outsiders looking for something to gripe about

Hardly. No one is committed to buying from either. I would like to think my fate is my own, not some monster corporations. Just say no.
