I've tried the plastic fencing sold at Home Depot to keep him out. I stapled the fencing to woooden stakes and put them into the ground, and he still rips the fence up and eats my hostas. Any good suggestions?

You need a better fence than the plastic stuff. Try a better fence and some of the other stuff that has been suggested like the pepper and the peppermint.

I have a schnauzer too. They are great pups but are highly intelligent and will get into trouble if they get bored.

Peppermint oil bought from a health food store dropped regularly on the ground near the hostas can prevent the dog from eating them. If not try a water pistol. Peppermint oil works best on cats but does work on dogs too.
