Like most of us, he's only looking at half of the issue. If I look at the illegal immigration issue like an economics theory (in fact the illegal immigration issue is as much an economic debate as any other issue) of supply and demand, we keep focusing only on the "demand" end of the issues- the illegal immigrants who come here for work (along with the other "perks"). We also need to be focusing on the "supply" end of this issue-those that are breaking the law by employing illegal immigrants. True, drug dealers, gang leaders and other violent criminals that come here as illegal immigrants need to be dealt with by our police- and maybe our armed forces. However, more effort should be made to go after businesses and individuals that are hiring illegals; these people are largely the cause of the illegal immigration and all the problems Americans are facing because of it. Stop providing jobs for illegal immigrants and many won't come- or, they will get in line to enter legally just like we've simply been asking them to do. Just wondering how much less effort it would take this mayor and his police force to track down and arrest a few people that have broken laws by hiring illegals than it is to go after the hard-core criminals; it certainly would be much safer. Not that I'm saying we should ignore the illegal immigrants that have come here to become hard-core thugs, joining gangs, selling drugs, murdering, etc- we certainly should and I'm wondering if they are illegal, if they should be entitled to all the rights and "due process" as Americans (I actually assume they are but it would be an interesting question for us to ask if Americans think they SHOULD). I just think the amount of press and fear generated by a couple arrests of people going to jail for breaking the law of employing illegal immigrants would do a great service to deter others from also breaking this law. Without the inducement of jobs (we also need to look at all the "services" granted to them) here in the US for illegal immigrants, many wouldn't bother coming or would come legally.
