Most religious requirements have an origin in common sense. In the case of sex without marriage the principal is the sanctity of the family which is the basic building block of most societies. When family structure is eroded then social ills soon follow - that should be obvious to anyone in a western culture.
So celibacy outside marriage and fidelity within marriage has been the norm for millenia.
However, the devotees of any religion are human and often cannot meet the stringent standards set. That does not invalidate either the faith or the rule and shows that the path of faith requires discipline and self control - it is not a crutch for the inadequate as some would have us believe.

This principal has never fully been kept, even in the Victorian era when people were supposed to be prudish. It has been broken most frequently in the past 80 years, and especially (at least in the European countries, Australia and America) the past 40 years due to the sex revolution. I don't know how countries in Africa, Asia, and South America have reacted to the sex revolution; perhaps it hasn't affected some of them at all. But I do know that in some countries of those continents, it's very much like it is here in America, where I live. Due to the bombardment of sexually explicit images for the past several decades via print, television, and movies, we have become anesthetized to the immorality of pre-marital sex. It means nothing to many now; there is no hesitation. Now, some people don't understand why people would wait until after their marriage to have sex; they can't see the value in that. Society is numbed to the point that they don't even know they're numb anymore.

Not all religions preach that sex without marriage is a sin, so the premise of your question is false in the first place.

Easy. ALL religions DON'T preach that. Relatively few do.

People practice extra-marital sex openly because they really don't care what God thinks about it.

Others, like professing Christians, still practice it anyway, albeit less-openly, because they think they can get away with it.

It's tought for alot of immature people to go against what society is (get this) forcing down their throats. Namely, that extra-marital sex is perfectly normal and acceptable. Champion: Hollywood.

However, it is becoming more popular among young Christians (teens and pre-teens) to remain virgins until marriage.

The "religion" of pop culture says that sex without marriage is okay.

This is a tremendous challenge to Christianity and other traditional religions.

With love in Christ.

It's called the post-modern age: there is no absolute truth.

I am religious and accept the dictum that all sex outside of marriage is sin, so I got married!! But another "religious" person may say, "I accept only certain aspects of this religion and 'sex outside of marriage being sinful' is not one that I accept". Of course, there are many non-religious persons. In the post-modern age, there is no absolute truth: what works for you may not necessarily work for me; so let me live my life and you live your life.

Yes, Christianity teaches all sex outside the "marriage act" is sin. I hope this helps.

This DOES NOT MEAN that a Christian couple can not have sex for pleasure, they can!

BECAUSE OF THE GOD OF THIS WORLD
Re 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Re 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
2co 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
2co 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

These preachings came from prophets, these prophets were false, this principal is flawed.

Besides, go back and read your story book. Men slept with servants and slaves all the time.

Pardon me for being the devils advocate, but before making huge generalizations I can think of one religion (I am sure there are more) that condones whatever sexual activity that is mutually beneficial for both partners.
