Get your mouth washed out with soap? Did they talk reasonably with you about it? Yell? Punish you some way? Or ignore the whole thing?

Out of respect never said swear words. This is something this world is missing, respect for ones parents, or caretakers. I even used words like please and thank-you, really it didn't hurt.

I think I might have had my mouth washed out with soap only once. I didn't swear a lot as a kid. My parents were of the belief that spanking and physical discipline didn't work. This was back in the 50s-60s.
Cussing is way too common nowadays. Maybe if more adults didn't do it, then kids would think twice about cussing.

If I was lucky I just got yelled at or reprimanded but sometimes, I was taken over Mom's knee and spanked with her wooden spoon. I was threatened with soap in the mouth but it never happened.

Most of the time it was ignored (making a big deal about the words is what gives them their power!) but I pulled out all the punches once and called my mother the c-word. I got slapped right across the face, and to this day I can't say that word!

in our religion, we are taught that cussing is wrong, so when we learned one unknowingly, we were let off the hook and were explained to about how thats not a nice word. If we say it knowingly, yeah were punished.

when i was younger i was punished. but i really didnt know what i was saying. as i went into my teens i became a potty mouth, which most teens go thru. my parents really didnt do anything about it. no i dont do it as much but i still dont get punished.

I never had the nerve to try it.
Neither did my kids although we argued (Sometimes quite a lot.) no one wanted it to reach the point of 'cussing'.

When I was a kid, kids would never dream of cursing in front of their parents. Or at all.

Nothing as long as I didn't cuss them out they didn't care.
