I'm going to be a freshman next year and I've heard the upperclassmen are really mean. Is it true? Anybody have any tips? The place is so big--I know I'll get lost.

Thanks for any help.

Well, I'm going to be an upperclassman this upcoming year, so I can give you a few tips...

First of all, SHOW RESPECT for the upperclassmen. I've never had any problems with them, and in fact have many friends who are or have been upperclassmen. The one thing they always say they hate is little freshmen or sophomores who act as if they're "all that" and who think they're so much smarter and cooler than everyone else. Trust me, they're not.

Now, I wouldn't say that there's any need for you to fear the upperclassmen; they're actually pretty cool once you get to know them. They have much more experience in your school and in life than you, and they have some pretty cool stories to tell, in addition to tips on surviving high school. I actually cried when this year's seniors graduated; they were some of the coolest people to hang around with, so laid back and funloving.

So I guess my best advice for you when taking on the upperclassmen is to show them respect and earn theirs by being true to yourself and getting involved in activities and groups you love. And don't worry; they've been through all you've been through, too. Just don't act like a jerk. ;-)

As for not getting lost: don't worry. My high school is pretty big too, and I thought I'd never get the hang of it. I used to take wrong turns coming out of my classrooms all the time. But I got used to it pretty durn fast and could navigate it it my sleep now. Don't worry, they're be people to help you if you get lost or confused. It really is true that high school is some of the best years of your life - enjoy it! :-)

I understand why you're scared. I was a freshman last year. they told us thoughs stories to scare us. Thats probably all it is. Some of them will be mean, but a majority of them will be nice. It you need help finding someplace, ask a TEACHER because some upperclassmen may send you in the wrong direction as a joke. Don't look around all scared and stuff, and if the school is as big as you say it is, then you can "look" like an upperclassmen. Don't be scared. You'll do fine!!!

It all depends on which school you go to, and where you live.

In my school, [in Coral Gables, FL] everyone in my highschool tends to be mean toward each other. If you go there, you'll see what I mean. It's amazing how people can treat each other like that, being all the same ages and all. We are supposed to set an example, not ruin what the adult work thinks of us...

However. I've heard from other people that in their schools all the people are nice, and help each other, and sometimes I've heard that the upperclassmen tend to teach the freshmen about the school and how things go, and etc.

So it really all depends.

My advice is to be yourself, and show no fear. Because showing fear will ruin everything. Make new friends, and enjoy the rest of life.

Just be yourself and try not to look at highschool as a big scary place. Some seniors may try to give freshmen a hard time, but it all depends on where you go to school. Where I went, everyone got along with each other because it was a small school. Just keep your head high and make good friends. Goodluck. Hope this helps, I've been out of highshool for 5 years now so things may have changed.

Rumors always exist about the upperclassmen being mean. Avoid them, and they should leave you alone. If you can, try and go on a tour of the school, especially if you already have your schedule so you can find your way around and plan out your route. If you call the office, they should be able to schedule a tour for you.
Just be yourself, and stay with your friends, I am sure they are just as nervous as you. Good luck!
