Golf balls basically last forever, as long as you don't use them. The rubberband core can harden up after several years, but that can be 10 years before you'd notice.

balata golf balls, which are no longer made. lost 1 foot per month as they sat on the shelf. i was given some golf balls about 2 months ago at a lumber yard that i do business with. they are the most popular brand going. they had the owens corning label on them and the pink panther. the copyright date was 1997. the store mgr told me that he had been given them in 1999. so the next saturday i teed up a new ball. they were at least a club and half shorter than i normally hit. ie example. normal pitching wedge is 145 to 150. i couldnt hit it 130 if i strained.
i played 3 holes before i figured it out. so yes they do lose distance and spin over time.

The soles of my golf shoes turn to dust after five years storage in my shoe cabinet. Like every plastic produces, I think Golf balls also have shelf life. In time it should turn also to dust, don't know when either. But, if you place them under water and sun for some months, they turn really hard. Also it is not recommended to keep them in the car and park in the sun for long time.

the balls won't deteriorate, but on the labels for some taylormade inergels i have(they are packaged in plastic tubes instead of carton sleeves), taylormade claims that over time moisture and other atmospheric elements will seep through urethayne and/or balata slightly afffecting compression and distance on all golf balls. i also hear balls found in the water are definitely not 100%, but a hacker like me can't really tell much difference. i use them all the time, and i never throw away a ball unless it is cut up.

I use new balls everytime I play a round. After I have used them on the course I keep them at home and practice my chipping and putting with them.
