We like to pretend we're an example, but as long as we keep allowing religious artifacts like the 10 commandments into public buildings like courthouses, we're no better than the countries with state sponsored religions.

Somewhat, although according to UN and other organization's that do studies on religious freedom there are nations that do a bit better job (like Canada...although the US and Canada are very close on their ratings...and there are a few others, too, that usually get high marks in the studies). The studies usually make some recommendations about how the nations can improve and usually state the reasoning why they came up with the conclusions they did and why the marks came about. (most of the studies are usually done over a five or six year period where they talk to people about religion, they read magazines, newspapers, watch television, listen to politicians, and so on and on and on...they really dive into. The groups are usually composed of a large group of people from various nations and religious groups and those without religious affiliation, etc...they are really quite interesting to read if you ever have the time....they tend to be long). It's interesting to see where we can improve as well as interesting to see how we compare to other nations. It's interesting although I don't think many people bother to read any of the reports and surveys done by interfaith organizations, UN, human rights organizations, etc.

I wouldn't say that we're a good example because we still have aspects that aren't seperate, but we're better off than countries that make the laws from their holy books their countries' official laws.
