Your dog seems to have you trained well! Congratulations, its a very clever dog but too much ice-cream is not good (like the others said, no chocolate) and try to see your dog's needs as dog's needs...Dogs are not human! The dog doesn't need ice-cream, he needs understanding and good loving care, proper dog food, proper exercise, play with other dogs, human & canine interaction and companioship...but not anthropocentric interpretations like "my dog looks sad, he wants ice-cream..." What happened was, you interpreted your dog's expression as sad when the ice-cream van was around and treated him to an ice-cream (perhaps you were feeling guilty for some reason?), thus rewarding his behavior...So he learned that to look a certain way (in your words, "sad") when ice-cream man is around, is a rewarding behavior, so he repeats it...and gets more ice-cream! It can be funny, but I think we should not treat dogs as humans, it is disrespectful for their own ways and needs...We should try and understand them and learn their language, not only expect them to understand us and our language...Dogs are great friends, they are not merely performers or helpers or clowns or slaves who work for us...They are intelligent beings with feelings and they have their own mental and social characteristics, so we should learn to look after them properly and respect them. I wish you a great time with your dog!

Chocolate ice cream does not contain enough actual chocolate to hurt a dog. Most is just chocolate flavor.
My dogs LOVE ice cream!!! We often take them to get it!!!!

a little bit of ice cream is okay as long as it doesn't contain any cocoa or chocolate. I give my dogs fingerfulls of ice cream, vanilla, from time to time but not too often. Remember, NO CHOCOLATE, NO COCOA.

once in a while's not going to hurt, ours lived to a ripe old age of nearly 18, as long as there's no chocolate in it or on it, go ahead make his day! It's not as if he has it all the time.
