My six year old male dog has just started coughing (which sounds like honking), and acting like he's throwing up. He has not had contact with any other dogs, besides my other dog, and she hasn't had any contact either. I do volunteer at an animal shelter, so is it posible to get something from the contact with my clothes?
help!

You can bring home sickness from the shelter. This is most likely Kennel Cough. Like a cold or the flu in humans, just as contagious and easy to get.
It will clear up on it's own in about 2 weeks. He needs rest, no running, that will make the coughing worse. And fluids, just like people with the flu.
Good Luck
PS. You don't need antibiotic. Vets only give them out when there is a danger of it turning into pneumonia. That is not your case.

Some intellectual issues are good documented in puppies, adding dog obsessive compulsive ailment. Post demanding pressure ailment may also be visible in puppies that experience suffered a essential emotional trauma (comparable to being crushed) in the way in which they behave round folks, typically notably round folks who resemble the abuser. The reliability of the 'prognosis' depends on the reliability of the practitioner. Certified dog behaviorists are expert and educated to respect behavioral issues and, assuming they real are licensed through an accrediting school, are in general trustworthy. Unfortunately, such a lot animal coaching and behaviour professions are unregulated - someone can name themselves a "instructor" or a "behaviorist", despite the fact that they have got no formal schooling in any respect. Most rescue corporations and shelters depend upon volunteers or minimally educated employees participants. Some are very well, and such a lot aren't practically so well as they suppose. When searching for a official, do your homework. Ask approximately the 'official's' schooling. If you do not respect the title of the school or tuition at which s/he studied the career, you're definitely handling a quack.

I think it might be kennel cough. If you rub your dogs throught and he starts coughing from that I heard that means you do has it then. It is the season for it though. Just watch with you other dog. Kennel cough it highly contagous.

Running may not be a good idea for you dog now untill you find out what the prob is.

If it is a Toy breed , Min Pin, or Boston Terrier or pug, it sounds like what is called reverse sneezing..this is a trachea weakness..if it becomes serious, there is a surgery to correct.
One pug owner said that his dog stops when he lifts its hind legs! Heat or other stress makes this condition worse.

the vet will prescribe bronchial dilators.

You should see a vet for ceratin diagnosos.
If it is reverse sneezing, runs are fine as long as he doesn't get too hot.

If your dog is not vomiting then I think it may be something stuck in his throat. Try giving him some fibreous food/liquids & watch the symptoms. Twice a day try lightly stroking his neck & ribs. If there is no improvement I think you should consult the vet & get him examined, it can be some infection.

If your dog is coughing and wretching then no....don't take him on a run. That would be cruel. Get him to a vet.....have him tested for heartworms....those are two signs of the disease.

He could have kennel cough which can be traansferred from place to place on your clothes. He may also have a growth or bone caught in his throat.

Take him to the vet.
