I have a younger brother and I'm in college. As useful and informative the internet is, it is not a safe place for children/preteens/teens/adults/seniors. I can understand where your mom is coming from, you have to becare. I know you don't want to hear this, but just think of it as your mom really loves and cares for you. There are services where she can put parental locks on certain things, like AIM and Yahoo, maybe she should invest some time in looking into those services. Good luck.

If you ever have a child someday you may understand her concerns. Many things I thought my parents were being totally unreasonable or/and overly cautious. Now, I understand a little better...
Is it possible that you could work out a compromise w/ your mother? IMing during certain hours only and while she is present (not necessarily lookin' over your shoulder, though)?
My cousin has a filter whereby she determines from whom her son may receive emails. In fact, she just changed his level of access to "full" because of not only his age but the degree of trust/responsibility that he has shown thus far...
Whatever you do, please don't sneak around and do it anyway. It will only breed distrust between you and frustration for you.
When my niece was an teenager she attempted to sneak around and lie about her whereabouts...her aunts, uncles talked to her and let her know don't start that type of behavior reminding her of the level of trust she already from her parents reflected in the such things as her curfew.
I guess what I'm trying to say, many have been through similar situations, but ultimately have learned life is only as hard as you make it. In fact, it can be pretty darn fun!

Wow, I am appalled at the above answers..I am a Mom of teenagers and as long as you are trustworthy, and have been taught how to protect yourself on the net as in any public place, and you don't IM strangers, then you should be allowed to use the Internet message services. The Internet is the new social meeting places for people of all ages. You must learn how to protect yourself and interact with others safely. However if you are not trustworthy and have abused the privilege then your Mom is right to restrict you!.

Becky - you are 12 years old. I know you are rapidly growing into a young woman and before you know what has happened you will be an adult. That is the problem with adults, it has happened to us in different ways, and we in turn try to save our children and grandchildren from falling into the same horrible traps. Your mom will know things that she has not told you about news items or articles she has read. All over the world, young boys and girls are being trapped into compromising positions by evil men who prey on young children. That is not a Jack and the Beanstalk type of story. It is a fact, a horrible fact which your mom is only too aware of. Prove to her Becky, that you can be trusted, that you are mature for your age and that you accept her advice. In a years time when you are a teenager you are going to need a true friend and who better than your mom...Take care and God bless..................

If you live at home you need to abide by your parent's rules. When you become an adult and move out you can do what you want.
It is dangerous and your parents should not allow you to touch an internet computer without being there and supervising.
Time for you to start growing up.

She is simply trying to protect you against the predators that is on line. Someone can get all of your personal info with just tiny amounts of info that you give them. For example, if you give then your school mascot, they can trace it back to your school.

You're smart enough not to give out information and you know who you're talking to. Just know your friends.
