The other day I was tidying up my bathroom, and had my stereo on to a hip-hop/rap station. The volume wasn't up really loud or anything, either.

My father came up the stairs, heard the song, and instantly said, "You're not listening to that type of music, are you?" I opened my mouth to say, "No, of course not," but then I realized that what type of music I listen to is my choice, not his, and instead responded, "Yeah, I am."

Both my parents dislike rap, and are now constantly lecturing me because I actually listen to it and like it. They also seem to dislike country, and really any type of music that doesn't fit into their preferred genres of oldies and classic rock. I listen to more a varied selection of music, so we often disagree on music choices.

So my questions are, how much should I let them influence me, and how can I get them to realize that it's okay for me not to like the same types of music as them?

None. No influence. Kids and parents NEVER like the same music. It's what helps define generations.

Okay...first of all, you neglected to say how old you are. If you are 18 years old, then of course you are free to do anything that does not give them a headache.

If you are under 18, your parents have an obligation to discuss certain topics brought up in the music you are listening to. If you are listening to music that advocates drug use, violence, or irresponsible sexual activity, then they should be discussing these topics with you to make sure that you have both sides of the issue so you can make informed choices about your life.

As far as telling you what you can and can't listen to...that's unwise on their part. Parenting is about choosing your battles. Telling you what music you should listen to is low on that list. Telling you not to do drugs is a much better place to concentrate their "parental authority."

Well parents usually know best, BUT it seems your are being rather stubborn! I would say choose what you want to listen to, but do it carefully. Make sure its what you like and want and not just something that the rest of the world is into. Because it's definatley not right if u listen to rap bc your parents dont want you to. Rap can be full of pride and things that people dont really need unless they are trying to be oh so "individual".

Definitely listen to their concerns. But not necessarily their music choices. Get your influences from all around and as much as you need. There is validity in both of your concerns. Pay attention, heed the signs and do right. Good luck.

too bad your parents are failing to include more love and respect in their family.
I'd just go on telling them what you like and want - not that they care. most parents want their kids to be under their control and submissive - regardless of what the kid prefers.
you just have to be your self and insist on your choices (unless they are dangerous or bad).

Depending on how old you are..your music you listen to is your choice..not theirs.
