Oh my gosh...I've just started reading the best book. "Candy Freak" by Steve Almond. It's about the candy that used to be available, but now isn't because of corporate America's willingness to only sell what will be enormously profitable. This guy is hilarious, and take you on a sticky sweet trip down memory lane...talking about Kits and Carvelle bars and pixie sticks and Hershey's Cookies and Mint, and all those wonderful, lost and forgotten treats of our childhood. Go to the library and check it out if you are a candy freak like me.

Sugar Babies, JuJu Beads, Chicken Bones, Chocolate Drops, Redbird Stick Candy (came in hoarhound, vanilla, and several fruity flavors - popular around Christmastime). We would roll an orange to get it juicy, poke a hole in the stem end, insert a vanilla candy stick and use it as a straw to suck the juice out of the orange. Then we would eat the candy and the orange flesh that was still attached to the skin. YUM!!
