Mandarin Chinese has the most speakers there's no arguing about that, but English is the most widely spoken as it is the international language of trade and transport, it's the first language of America, Canada, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, the second language of India and many other countries.
So English hands down.

English is the most WIDELY spoken language across the planet. Whereas Mandarin is the language spoken by the MOST people as a single population.

English is known by the most people if you count 2nd languages.
So depending on how you look at it either of those. I mean more people speak English but more people speak Chinese regularly.
So are you talking what is the language the most people speak or what is the language the most people use as a fist language? You have to be more clear with your question if you want only one answer.

there are about 6800 languages in the world, but the most widely spoken language is mandarin Chinese (they are a lot of people). Second place for English. And Italian? Only a few people speak it! Sigh!! Sob!!! Ciao ciao!
