You can buy the tickets for Liberty Island and Ellis Island at Castle Clinton, which is in Battery Park. The Bowling Green station is closed, so you can take the R as someone suggested, but probably easiest and least confusing is to take the 1 to South Ferry (check for changes - there have been alot of subway changes due to construction this summer). Facing the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, go to your right around all the construction until you can see the Bowling Green subway station (on the left) and you get past the construction. Turn left and Castle Clinton will be in front of you. Go early to get your ticket - the boats sell out! It is also friggin' hot here in the summer. There's not much to see on Liberty Island. You can't go up inside the statue very far. The stairs are extremely narrow (one person wide) and it's 10 to 20 degrees hotter than the air temperature inside. Your trip includes Ellis Island as a stop so plan to go there too. Museum is extra and worth seeing once. If you just want a good view of the statue, take the Staten Island Ferry for free - round trip takes an hour....

The subway#1 line also stops at South Ferry. There's a boat that goes to the Statue and also to Ellis Island (worth the extra trip). They are close by each other.
