The festival of Lammas is tomorrow, if you're Pagan, Wiccan, ect. you'll understand, but I still haven't worked out how to light charcoal. It'll be on top of sand, and inside a pot (well, cauldron), don't know whether that makes a difference or not?

Also, please could you tell me how much smoke comes off charcoal when you burn something on it like insence?

DO NOT LISTEN TO WHAT THESE PEOPLE ARE SAYING. DO NOT USE KINGSFORD OR LIGHTER FLUID! You could get hurt. Scary.

You need to buy self-igniting charcoal. You want to hold it in one hand (I actually use tweezers) and light the top edge of it with your lighter, or candle. I use a candle, because sometimes it takes time to light. You'll see it catch and it will fizz and sparkle a little. Do this at least 10 minutes prior to ritual. You'll want to make sure it totally catches along the top, because thats where your loose incense will land. Practice on a few first.

As for how much smoke- it depends on how much incense you place on it. There will be a lot at first, but as the incense burns, the smoke will begin to wane. The thing about loose incense is that youll get a lot of smoke for a short period of time. With cone and stick incense, you get a moderate amount of smoke steadily.

So, if you are trying to consecrate/seal your circle or increase your ritual mindset, you might want to use stick or cone. Loose incense is awesome for evoking God/dess or the element of air, or doing it as part of a working... because you get a nice dramatic effect, and then it goes away shortly.

Id advise you to practice before your ritual. Good luck!!

If it is a small cauldron, get a heatproof mat. I recommend you buy a copper incense burner. Cauldrons shouldn't really be used. Get some tweezers and try to hold the charcoal in that. Then just simply use a match. If you are lucky light it in your fingers and quickly drop it in the vessel you are using.

Charcoal sparkles and a bit of smokes comes off it only until it turns grey. It's just like an incense cone. It's not smelly or black. Don't put it too near the walls though, else it'll turn things black. After that the only smoke you will have is when you add incense granuals.

It does get extremely hot so be careful.

Blessed Be

Hold the charcoal with an ice tongs or a fork and touch a lighter to it until is sparks. Wait until the charcoal is white before you put the incense on it and go from there.

NEVER EVER use BBQ charcoal and NEVER use charcaol lighter fluid. It is a different kind of charcoal entirely and anyone who tells you to use it as a substittue is an idiot. ESPECIALLY if you are doing an indoor ritual!

a few drops of charcoal lighter on the charcoal will get it lit. the amount of smoke created by incence depends on how much you use. small amout, little smoke, large amount more smoke. be careful, so you don't burn to much or the charcoal may go out.

to light coal you have to soak it with charcoal lighter fuel first then set a match to it. if you are doing a lot pile them in a cone shape then pour on the fluid to cover all coals and let sit for a couple of seconds then light when they all are grey then you are all set and use a tool to distribute them evenly.
charcoals are very smoky and dangerous to inhale.

that is secure. merely make sure that you positioned the lighter fluid on previously you even uncomplicated the tournament. under no circumstances positioned on lighter fluid after the hearth has already began. when you're cooking over it you need to make optimistic the lighter fluid is burned off previously putting something on it in the different case it is going to wind up tasting like lighter fluid.

Keep putting lighter fluid on it until it soaks it up. Keep adding fluid everytime it appears dry. That should do it... expect a good amount of smoke until it embers up.
