All American Coleslaw
Ingredients:
1 1/2 pound Green cabbage; cored, and finely shredded
3 tablespoons malt vinegar
1/4 teaspoon Salt
2 Carrot, medium; grated
2/3 cup Mayonnaise
Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, toss the cabbage with the vinegar and salt. Grate the carrot directly into the bowl. Add the mayonnaise and toss well. For best flavor, let sit in the fridge for about 30 minutes before serving.

Usually just chopped cabbage and carrot. The dressing can be made a zillion ways but mayo and sugar are a must. Everything else is open to interpretation but I'm pretty sure pickle is not one of the ingredients. You're thinking of potato salad.

I know you asked for "real" coleslaw, but I have to tell you I just had some fixed in a different way. My husbands father remarried and his wife made us dinner. In this she made her version of coleslaw so that her husband would eat it (he hates carrots). She used tomatoes and cucumbers instead of carrots and of course the vinegar, mayo and sugar. I didn't think I would like it but it was a pretty good taste!

Sliced white cabbage, shredded carrots and a little sliced scallion, are the main ingredients. To this you add a cole slaw dressing. You can buy the dressing or make you own. The dressing has mayo, sugar, vinegar s&p and horseradish.
