Only if you allow it to.
I think you'll find that at most places you actually have a lot more leeway than you think.
The first step is to stop giving a damn. When Lumbergh comes by and starts hassling you about the TPS reports and you find yourself getting stressed out because you still haven't filed them just stop and repeat this mantra, aloud if you like, "I don't give a damn."
The next step is to see how far you can push the envelope. This has completely changed my work experience. Start off small, try adding an extra ten minutes to your fifteen minute break. See if anyone says anything. They probably wont. Try coming up with a new way to push the envelope everyday. Here are a few examples from my past week at work.
I and two coworkers built a fort completely out of stacked paper shredders, photo printers, and replacement speakers.
Two days ago I used my entire work shift to build a working trebuchet out of office equipment. It was effing sweet.
Yesterday my friend-and-coworker Brigette and I left work to hang out at the coffee house around the corner to sip mocha frappes and play a heated game of War. We were gone for 45 minutes and no one said boo.
I've been doing this not-giving-a-damn and pushing of the envelope for about a year now with no repercussions. Meanwhile people in other departments are getting fired for using the company mailing supplies (ie stamps) to mail their bills. Once.
The only way I can figure my getting away with everything while others can't is that either I'm an untouchable golden god or management is too perplexed to deal with me and my cohorts because we don't bother consulting the employee handbook before getting up on the counters to have a dance party. Basically your bosses only have as much power as you allow them.

Yeah, its a sodding nightmare. Its just about ok if the people you work with are ok, but I have always found work to be restrictive, it takes up time that could be spent doing nothing, or something interesting.
We weren't made to work and work and work. I think we went wrong when we left the trees. What a life just hanging around, scratching and eating fruit! Then again I know a few people like that now!

Yes I used to do lots of different things. But these days I cant be bothered to do anything because I'm so tired or pressed for time. I guess that's the trade you make for money.

You realize you can choose where you work, right?
So unless you like having a reason to complain, you've got no right to complain about something that happens to be in your control.

Yes, freedom means freedom of the luckier ones, that we hate and are our bosses sometimes.
