new cars are expensive to insure - why not save some cash and buy a second hand car - i have bought cars for less than a grand and fully comp about 150 per year.

My first car which I bought was a Peugeot 206 1.1litre engine. My tax was the cheapest of car tax, and it was a good runner. I got it for £5,000 and it was only 2 years old! Bargain! and this was from a Peugeot dealer.

your neighbourhood insurance broker should be able to provide the answers.
If you have previous accidents, any car you buy will cost you lots in insurance coverage.

Would think it would be something like a Yaris, Micra or a Lupo as long as you go for the smallest engine size.

Suzuki Wagon R+ Hatchback
TARGET PRICE: £6,829
PRICE: £7,999

The Wagon R+ has a lively engine and you'll find good space and kit for the money

ON THE ROAD

Performance
The Wagon R+ comes with a 1.3-litre engine packing 75bhp and a healthy 85lb ft of pull, which gives it peppy performance around town. It’s also pretty sprightly getting to 60mph, taking 11.5 seconds, which means that it can cope surprisingly well with driving on the motorway.

Ride & handling
The Wagon R+ makes easy work of town driving thanks to its light steering. It’s simple to slot through traffic and into parking spots and the ride is fine on side streets, but it gets more choppy on the open road. The tall body means there’s a fair degree of lean through bends, too.

Refinement
In town, the Wagon R+ does not suffer too much in the way of engine or road noise, although its steering feels vague and the gearchange rather sloppy. Out of the city and things get a bit more rowdy as engine noise begins to intrude, and road and wind roar become intrusive with speed

OWNERSHIP

Buying & owning
The Wagon R+ is keenly priced. Residuals are respectable for the class, too, and decent discounts are available on the list price. Running costs should be reasonable, with group three insurance and good fuel economy.

Quality & reliability
There should be few worries about the Wagon R+’s reliability because Suzuki has a reputation for producing rugged engines and transmissions, and the car is backed by a three-year/60,000-mile warranty. The cabin is functional and solid and rather than stylish, with lots of unappealing hard grey plastic.

Safety & security
Twin front airbags and a central three-point belt in the back are standard on the Wagon R+, but side and curtain ’bags aren’t available. Anti-lock brakes are standard but there’s no traction or stability control option. Deadlocks aren’t fitted and the Wagon R+ proved too easy to break into when tested in our Security tests.

On the road

IN THE CABIN

Behind the wheel
The cabin could be a lot better because too many minor switches appear to be just scattered over the dash, and the stereo controls are fiddly to use. The steering wheel is fixed in place and the driver’s seat does not adjust for height, although the upright driving position is comfortable enough and gives good all-round visibility.

Space & practicality
The square styling and tall roof of the Wagon R+ mean lots of cabin space and versatility, and even the tallest of passengers has plenty of headroom. This space helps with legroom as well, because occupants sit bolt upright. There is room for two adults in the rear, but three is a bit of a squeeze. The boot is small, but augmented by split and fold rear seats. Storage is good.

Equipment
There is only one trim level for the Wagon R+, and it supplies lots of kit for the money. Air-conditioning, remote central locking, power steering, CD player, and electric front windows and door mirrors as standard. A four-speed automatic gearbox is optional. Metallic paint is the only other option to add, costing £200.

GL
Decent kit on the Wagon R+ includes remote central locking, electric front windows, electric door mirrors and a CD player. Chilled air is standard, as are roof rails, deadlocks and two front airbags
