Use light colors for the wall such as a yellow and accent the window in the room (if there is one) with nice drapery using a valance and pull open mid size drapes of a light color. Leave the furniture to a minimum and create a focal point. Could be a picture or a vase of flowers. Leave the wall decor sparse with 1 or 2 hangings, usually one for that focal point. If you have carpet, its nice to replace with a wood floor, but that is some money.

That is depending on the room and what you want to use it for. For a Dining Room you could have one interior wall mirrored from the floor to the ceiling. It gives the perception of being a bigger room. But whatever you want to use a small room for, I would be sure to use only light colors to decorate with.

Mirrors usually help. Also, you can go to your hardware stores like Lowe's places like that and get some colors that make the room look bigger.

This may be completely wrong for most people - but - I have found that filling smaller rooms with a functional layout (furniture, tv, computer, etc) makes them appear bigger. Also, painting an accent wall or two can help.

One thing that always seems to work is adding large 16 or 18 inch tiles on the floor. As you walk into the room they draw your attention and let you think the room is bigger.

Paint walls, or what ever treatment you use to finish them, light colors vs a darker ones. Use mirrors in strategic places. Avoid doors and room dividers etc. Go for smaller rather than larger furniture and keep it 'uncluttered' and organized.

The lighter the color paint/wallpaper the bigger it makes the room look.
Also, the mirrors a good idea!...if you can stand to clean it all the time or to look at yourself constantly....lol
