Does your friend want to stop drinking, or do you want him to?

If he's determined, a support group could help, the support of others in the group is far more important than the 12 steps.

If you want him to quit, don't bother; if he thinks you're trying to run his life, he'll stop talking to you.

When I went into AA because I thought "I need to quit drinking," it didn't work, AA was full of attention whores whining about how life sucked. When I thought "I'm going to quit drinking," I did it on my own, and I've been sober for three years.

I really believe it is a personal decision. For some people yes and others no.I believe it's what you want, or what they want.
