Catholics have been spewing anti-semitism since day 1.....and it only took them until 1967 to stop blaming the Jews as Christ-killers....only 1,967 years...

So I can see where Mel and his daddy learned it from.....Hitler too. The church.

I'm annoyed that he hides behind drinking. Being drunk never got anyone to say something that wasn't already somewhere lurking in the psyche. If he is an anti-semite, why not just admit it.

Hate the Jews.
What is that all about?
I think it stems from knowing that God had chosen them.
You can't do anything to God, but you can to the Jews.
The Jews have been persecuted throughout history.
They were invited in and they brought up the economies, then when the economies were OK, they were thrown out. It happened in Spain and other countries throughout Europe.
As far as the Catholic church is concerned, during WW2 they didn't offer any assistance to the Jews that were being put to death. They remained silent.
There was an apology that was issued a little while ago, for not doing anything for them from the Catholic church.
Were the Catholic church anti-Semitic, yes. Did they teach their people that they were supposed to love, no.
Besides the Jewish people are not your enemies as I read from one of the responses to your question.

Mel Gibson is just a man, a rich one, but just a man.
If these things came out of his mouth, then he really is anti-Semitic. So there are millions of others that are also. Why single him out?

Has everyone forgotten that Jesus was a Jew.
What happened to Jesus, was supposed to happen.
That He was supposed to die at the hands of ( the religious and the Government ) It was the religious and the Romans that killed Him. It wasn't all of the Jewish people. There were many believers amongst the Jews.

I'm with "Kate" and "Daljac." Keep in mind that many biblical scholars (and others) had already taken him to task for his not-too thinly veiled anti-Semitism in the Passion picture.

And for those who think this is just something "stupid" he said while drunk, I don't think you're giving this any thought. Or you don't know much about the effects of alcohol. The point is unless your are near unconsciousness, in which case you usually can't speak at all, you are still subject to some boundaries. This is why you rarely hear a dead-drunk screaming "I hate my mother!" (And if he does, then I'd bet there's a bit of fire behind that hazy smoke.)

Having been a Catholic, I do recall a sort of tacit approval of anti-Semitism - even at the clergy level. But that was many years ago and since then the Catholic church has made great efforts in cleaning up its act. Gibson senior is a typical throwback. Mel has no excuse whatsoever. And I hope this informs opinions on any future religious project he undertakes.

See, as usual, people are not getting the entire story. The man made a movie about Christ and was withstood by the Jewish powers dominating Hollywood. The man lived under extreme stress because he made a movie about Christ. Why? Cause Jews hate Christianity. See, the bigotry started there, with Jewish hatred. Who are they to try and stop or pressure Mel for making a movie about Christ? They did just that. It was they who started the stress on his life. That stress was building up and hurting his career in a city dominated by Jews. When he got drunk, all of that stress just poured on out.

How does Hollywood become dominated by Jews? Who gets a movie? Who gets a promo? Who gets advanced? Why so many Jewish actors getting jobs? Are Jews promoting Jews, to the hurt of other non-Jews? Why am I anti-Semitic for pointing out bigotry?

Mel was not an anti-Semite. If he is now, surely, it's the Jews doing. How is a man supposed to respond to pressure like that? Except to hate them. (and still Mel doesn't hate them) And again, why do Jewish people have such a dominating stronghold over all the media and so many other areas of our lives?

The Catholic Church officially teaches:

When she delves into her own mystery, the Church, the People of God in the New Covenant, discovers her link with the Jewish People, "the first to hear the Word of God.

The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God's revelation in the Old Covenant.

To the Jews "belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ"; "for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable."

Neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during the Passion of Jesus Christ. The Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from Holy Scripture.

With love in Christ.

According to the rules, you can't be a good Catholic and hate Jews. John XXIII officially absolved them of that old Christ-killing thing. In 1967 I think.
A little late but credit where credit is due.
Of course Gibson's father and I think Mel himself think that John XXIII and all popes after him are not real popes.
I cannot really explain what that's all about. You'll have to get one of them to explain it.
.
My real point was that Mel and his father are part of a group of dissident Catholics that think that the reforms of the 2nd Vatican council went too far. So far as to call into question the legitimacy of Pope John the 23rd and all the popes elected afterward. These wackos think that whatever worked in the 13th century (not a high water mark for Jewish-christian relations) is just fine for now. I think most American Catholics want to pull their church into the 20th century at least. It's nothing to me, I don't even believe in god any more, I just wanted to stick up for my old gang.

I am so disgusted with his movie. There is so much anti-semetism today! You'de think that after the Haulocast everyone would friggin worship us or something or AT LEAST show that they're sorry. We were starving and DYING and what did christians, catholics, and other people do? Pretend it wasn't hapening. I mean, I'd at least expect people to apologize and at least never let it happen again. Instead: Let's make movies blaming the Jews for killing Jesus. What the he11? We defenitally did NOT!

For some reason Mel Gibson is somebody people listen to....I have no idea why. I don't have any respect for him. Good Catholics don't "learn" to hate anybody. No religion teaches hate....it's the people in the religion that make these decisions for themselves.

I don't know what a 'good' catholic is. If the catholic church teaches it's followers to 'hate' Jews then it isn't a very good church, is it? Doesn't the Bible tell us to love our enemies?

Old news folks.

Don't focus on the man...he's just a man, therefore capable of letting you down.

Focus on God.
