It would be best if he can see you if it's in front of a patio door. Put a soft pad or some carpet remnants in it. Put a small treat in there each day and he will begin to associate going inside with something pleasant.

Mine is on the front porch facing towards the house at an angle. He can see the front door, but the opening is away from sun and the weather. Very strategically placed. He visits it for about 2 minutes before he comes in and climbs up on the bed. Dogs love to be close to their owners, so whoever said the doghouse was in the living room - kudos to you, and the dog is obviously not stupid.
My dog is right now positioned beside me, flat out, while I type. He escorts me from room to room - including the bathroom. It's his job [he thinks] to protect me at all times. And like the American Express card - I don't leave home without him.

Have You ever noticed your dogs favourite place to be in the yard? Good place for house but try to make sure it is in the shade for comfort in summer months

Position it so he can still see you when he's in it. That way he won't feel cut off. Also, keep in mind the direction the wind blows so rain won't blow in.
