Just bake a regular rectangular cake (possibly and probably two depending on how many you plan to serve). After baking the cake, allow to cool, place them on a flat, foil covered board (I use a piece of half inch plywood with a double layer of foil) then start cutting the cake(s) and make the shape of the squirrel. To act as a guide, keep a picture nearby of the object you intend to make it look like. Take white frosting and mix some food coloring to get the different colors you need to make your image. Practice a bit with small amounts of food color and frosting to get just the correct look of color you want.
You can also a regular rectangular cake and 'paint' the image on to the cake using a base color frosting and use frosting tubes (they usually have them in the baking aisle of the store) and draw the image onto the cake.
Just take some time and practice to shape the cake and mixing the colors to get the look you want.

Actually, you can find a good coloring page of a squirrel online. Bake the cake according to recipe. Cut out the squirrel from the paper, put it on the cake. Keep it from slipping on the cake with a bit of icing. Carefully cut it out. Here are a few to choose from, or you can find yor own.
