Us country boys with sunburned necks, who fancied ourselves as crack shots and experienced woodsmen, were always on the lookout for a city kid to take on a snipe hunt.
We couldn’t wait to hand some greenhorn a gunnysack and fill him full of stories of birds that came when you whistled and walked right into the sack.
We’d laugh ourselves silly as we plotted setting him down on a snipe trail, sneaking off and letting him sit there until the cows came home and the hoot owls started to talk.

We also used to take newcomers to our small (pop. 1200) town out for some cow-tipping!!

First, guns were not allowed, for good reason. You get junior a long stick and be sure you get some for his buddies, wait until it gets dark after you already have a campfire going, then round up all the greenhorns to a nearby rocks and explain to them that snipe are afraid of fire that's why you had to take them away from the campfire, next have them take their stick and tap on the rock gently with a gunny stack open facing the rocks. You explain the snipe will run into the stack due to fear of the tapping sticks. You have them continue to tap while you go back to the campfire and enjoy the tapping music in the background.

Here's a tip for you. When a den chief we took some cub scouts on a snipe hunt. Be careful if your camped near a bluff.

We divided the snipe hunters into drivers and bag holders. When the last two bag holders wandered back to camp they were so mad they rained rocks down on us from the bluff. Up to that point it was a successful snipe hunt.

Last time I was in Kentucky....some good ol boys took me snipe hunting.....and left me all alone in the woods....with a warning to watch out for snakes....

Well to make a long story short.....I bagged 17 Snipe!!!

Course they did look an awful lot like fighting roosters...but I didnt see that as a big problem....since thats illegal anyway.

I remember doing that. We used to give them sticks to tap together and make them whistle. It was really fun because they would believe us. It was always with the younger kids too. We'd go up behind them and scare them.
