I am considering getting another dog as a companion for my 3 year old pom mix. He's very affectionate and definitely a momma's dog. I recently kept a friend's dog for 2 weeks and Eisenhower (my dog) was jealous and didn't really pay any attention to the other dog. However, I worry that he is lonely when I'm at work or school. Should I try another pet, or just let it be?

I would suggest doggie daycare before I would suggest getting another pet.

First, it will tell you if your dog would get along with other dogs.

Second, its cheaper in the long run and lot less hassle for you. He doesn't need to go everyday, once or twice a week is fine.

I would just let it be. Many people get a second dog as a companion for their first dog. It is a mistake because the dog sees you as his companion and then both dogs just lay around and wait for you to return. Its not like they run around and play all day while you are gone. I have 2 dogs thinking the same way you are now (Chinese Cresteds) and I wish I would have just stayed with the one. One is so much easier. Don't give in to the puppy dog eyes.

That is tricky. Here is my experience: I always had more then one dog and either they where best buddies or they just ignored one another. I think it is like people don't like everybody they meet, dogs are the same way. In the worst case they start fighting. I never had that, but I know someone that is dealing with that right now.
I have one dog right now and I don't think she is lonely when I am at work. She sleeps and when I get home its her time. She is used to that.

I just got a nine week old yellow lab yesterday to go along with my 3 yr old dachshund. Im enjoying both of them and they are getting along pretty well for the first few hours. I say go for it, two dogs are fun.
