YOU'RE SAYING HE EXIST, YOU PROVE IT

1. Faith is not proof. It's just a mental block to keep you from questioning your belief

2. Not understanding how the universe came about is not proof. Assumpions can not be accepted as proof.

3. Your existence is not proof. It's only proof that your mom and dad had sex if you're not a test tube baby

5. A feeling you have is not proof. The belief is what caused the feeling in the first place.

6. Miracles are not proof. The very meaning of a miracle is simply something you dont understand

7. Not understanding luck is not proof. Again, assumptions can not be accepted as proof

8. Bad accidents or natural dissasters in not proof. Once again, assumptions can not be accepted as proof.

What proof do yo have there is not a GOD? Science has not proven that the universes and our existence just came from nothing. It is even more amazing people believing a single cell or two in a vast nothingness exploded and formed the universe and everything in it. If there was nothing how were the cells formed? Then was there really nothing? Who or what made the cells that then began everything? If we then look deeper we must deduce if someone or thing was a creator then how were they created? Or essentially which came first the chicken or the egg?

And more and more science and archeology are proving much of the Bible and the people in it did exist. So I would say this: Neither of us will find the answer to our questions untill we face death. So I believe that believing will guarentee me eternal life. Being a true believer hurts no one else and usually makes most people better citizens of the world. I will not take the chance there is not a GOD. And when I die if there was not I was just a better person for my beliefs while I was here.

As for your point #9. Have you personally read the Bible from cover to cover and made the decision for yourself or are you just reading a website that may or may not be credible and taking for granted someone elses viewpoint? Try reading the Bible one time for yourself. You won't be magically converted to being a believer but you can then make an educated decision for yourself. If after you still choose to not believe you then can make educated arguement of why others should not believe.

I've answered this question before. It seems I answer it almost every day. Here's my last one:

As concisely as possible: do you have any "factual proof" that I exist? Read Hume. You function constantly with effective certainty about things you could never "prove." Hume showed you can't even "prove" effective causality. If you read philosophers of science such as Michael Polanyi or Thomas Kuhn (links below), you'll discover that science itself is not some "purely objective" enterprise, but is deeply marked by the a priori suppositions and ideological biases of scientists.

If you mean, are there data of human experience for which the existence of God offers the most coherent and complete account, the answer is yes.

(1) There is something rather than nothing.
(2) That something exhibits an unfathomably rich and intricate order and beauty, continuously demonstrating creative novelty in its evolutionary advance.
(3) Human persons exist, and in their interiority are conscious of themselves as the bearers of freedom; the ground of the existence of these persons cannot be less than they are.
(4) In the communion of love I know other human persons as infinitely valuable and incommensurate with the entire world.
(5) My conscience accuses me or commends me independently of all social and cultural influences. As C.S. Lewis observed, no permutation of "is" can produce an "ought."
(6) The reductionism and nihilism of contemporay unbelief is an historical and cultural aberration, and has proven incapable of supporting the ethical and aesthetic values of the great religious traditions.
(7) My love for other human beings is an existential testimony to their groundedness in an everlasting, loving, conscious, purposive reality.

I think really the most convincing datum suggesting God's existence is simply human consciousness itself (how exactly could the ground of consciousness be less than conscious itself?). Of course, reductionist materialists have to end up denying the existence of consciousness, so what does that tell us about irrationality and a priori assumptions and who is enslaved to them?

In the end, there are no knock-down "arguments" or "proofs" on either side; the matter comes down to a decision made by the whole person (see Hans Kung's text below, which exhaustively engages every major atheist position). Do you adopt a fundamental pessimism or a fundamental optimism? Is the ultimate nature of the universe such as to frustrate the deepest desires of the human heart, or not? Since theism is both plausible, and I at least have an existential intuition that a basically optimistic position ought to be taken towards existence, it's apparent to me that the sensible option is to be a theist.

On the other hand, if you want to continue to hold your atheism without engaging the challenges of a rational and philosophical theism, I say go ahead and wallow in ignorance.

If I could add one more thing:

PROOF explicitly means that the opposite of what you offer would have DISPROVEN god's existance.

Proof implies evidence. An hypothesis must be falsifiable in order to have evidence. In other words, there must exist some hypothetical evidence that, if it existed, would prove it wrong.

So, if I can take anything you christians say, flip it around backward, and it doesn't logically contradict "god", then you haven't provided proof.

PS: pamspraises, you can't logically prove a negative, and the default position of any logical thinker (and scientist) is not to assume something exists until proven wrong, but to seek evidence FOR it before you conclude that it has any validity.
You've got it backwards.

Besides, if you really do default to believing that something exists until proven false, I have this great invisible and silent dog that I'd like to sell you for $100,000. According to your logic, you must believe me.... but you wont. Clearly even you can see the error in your own idea.

PPS: Big papa's response is a child's response. It boils down to the idea that unless we know everything, god must exist. Here's the problem with that logic: It's called creating a God of the Gaps, or God of the Unknowns. Given that mankind continues to learn every day and make new discoveries, any god defined by man's lack of knowledge diminishes every day. Such a god is weak and dying. He can't grow stronger and has no power.
That's the reason why most *theologists* not only reject the "God of the Gaps" reasoning, but consider it an INSULT to god. It's based on the premise of a weak, dying god hiding in the corner, in the shadows of knowledge.

Science is the a search for answers in nature. The study of nature. How then can we expect to study God directly through nature, for if He is the "I am" and ~he was and is and always will be~ separate from from our natural world. He is not over this world. He is supernatural.

Not enough?
Look at your desk. Consider your desk as all the knowledge that ever was and ever could be about this place, the universe, in which we are placed. Determine what area there on you knowledge exists. Is it possible then, that the fingerprint, or even the proof of God exists somewhere beyond that speck? I would say so.

But further, I would say that even in my little speck of space on my desk, I can see reason to believe in God. The massive complexity. The long small statistics. The beauty of nature. And even, science itself and the search for the meaning of life, these are distinctly human, and a reason to search for God. As if that alone could be our purpose.

Further, as a Catholic, I take a more complex view of the Bible. The use of the bible requires a tediously translated and explained copy and oftentimes a good reference, in order to understand context, historical significance, and likely interpretation at the time it was written.

So, I think Atheism is fool's bet. Everything to lose and nothing to gain, but hey, its up to you.

dvlsadvocate: This is actually a scientist's response. You see, it includes everything others use to argue god's existence that the asker has chosen not to except. All that is left is what cannot be know. From where it says "but further" it is clearly not an insult to God. You have a rage against this arguement because you cannot use logic or science to attack it. You have attacked me instead, clearly with demeaning language, have you not? My God does is not dying just because you can't see his majesty in the creation of the universe or in the pleasure we take discovering it. Indeed to many of us science and its depth is an expression of Gods love for us. So, the sheer volume of knowledge wether it is known or unknown is just more proof of his existence.

Silly Atheists never have an email account to reply to.

Ahh...spoken like a true skeptic and atheist...you've got all the bases covered! You've got it all figured out...how wonderful for you! So, if you've figured it out, why do you need proof to the contrary? Why do you need this forum to answer a question that you already 'know' the answer to? Could it be that you are looking for incontrovertible 'proof' for the existence of a deity which you are longing for in your hear? Or, perhaps you are trying to convert believers into non-believers by the veracity of your logic? The truth is, that there is, never was, and never will be any conclusive and scientific evidence that would suffice to prove the case for the existence of something outside of yourself. So, are you satisfied by this answer...I seriously doubt it! It will be doubly interesting to see what you pick as the "best answer"!

do you need proof of a creator .there is only one .you can not comprehend this creator and our attempts have made it worse .there is no assurance at death you will continue on . thats an individual belief shared by many cause to simply dye would mean so little to them .
ITS not who what when where or why ,but how you live your life and if you do not enjoy it then you have indeed wasted it .
the thrill of being alive is enough for some but most will be unable to accept that this is it and all you get .LOOK how big the universe is and how small you are in it then tell me some creator cares enough to drop in and say hey and screw with everyone .does not make sense .
unless it is how you live and love and enjoy the gift of life .if you waste it then for sure there will be nothing to remember you by .

There are seven basic proofs God exists. Properly, they belong in a separate book all by themselves, but I will cover them briefly here.
(1) That there is a great CREATION is obvious. The very fact of the existence of THINGS; the universe, the solar system, the earth and all myriad forms of life upon it, demands a CREATOR!
(2) The existence of great, immutable, powerful LAWS (and I speak of the "laws" governing the physical universe; the laws of science and chemistry; laws governing the action of water in its three states; the cleavage and fracturing properties of minerals; gravity, inertia, isostasy, etc., etc.). The existence of these great laws demands a lawgiver!
(3) The intricacy of complex design; whether the feathers on the wing of a bird; the eye of a fly; the breathing apparatus of a dolphin; billions of intricately-designed snowflakes; your own muscular, skeletal, digestive and circulatory systems-etc., etc., requires a great DESIGNER!
(4) LIFE exists. Life in myriad forms. You and I both know that life only comes from preexisting life! This is called the "law of biogenesis." Life demands a great LIFE GIVER!
(5) Life only comes from preexisting life of the same kind! Thus, there is procreation, and the sustaining of life on our planet; the constant recycling of falling trees, rotting vegetation; the bacteria which break it down to become food for the insects which are food for dozens of other creatures, which are in turn food for larger creatures, which are in turn food for man; the cyclical character of our symbiotic environment which, like a gigantic machine was once "wound up," and is gradually running down, requires a sustaining force. Inherent within this proof are the laws governing the "conservation" of energy" and the laws of thermodynamics. It is obvious our universe has a great sustaining force-a GREAT SUSTAINER!
(6) Fulfilled prophecies, of which there are dozens, with dozens more yet to be fulfilled, constitute a great proof of Almighty God. Even simple high school or beginning college-level Bible handbooks such as Halley's, or the Angus Bible Handbook contain fascinating proofs from the spade of archeologists corroborating the prophecies of men who foretold the collapse of great empires and the emergence of others centuries and centuries beyond their own lifetime. Now, we are able to look back at such men as Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and others, and see what they foretold actually HAPPENED exactly as they foretold it!
Many of the biblical prophecies are in process of being fulfilled. The serious student of biblical archeology knows that it is axiomatic that, wherever archeology reveals information about ancient civilizations, it always corroborates the biblical record, never refutes it!
(7) The final proof-one which dyed-in-the-wool disbelievers will doubtlessly scoff at-is answered prayer! Of course. God does not answer the prayers of skeptics and disbelievers. However, those individuals who have experienced the answer to PRAYER; those who have been healed of their sicknesses and diseases, who have actually seen miracles performed, are no longer doubting, but believing. Answered prayer is definitely a proof that there is a God who can hear. and answer!

Unconditional Love - Do you have that and do you know what that is? No man, no matter how intelligent or brilliant, wise, or otherwise can or will have the complete understanding of that. You cannot and will not ever have that. It is impossible for man, woman, or child to display that type of love.

So, now you disprove this - GOD IS LOVE! Go ahead disprove it!

Secondly, what contradictions? Have you actually read and studied the Bible in whole? Do you know exactly what God has to say to you?

It appears to me that you do not have proof of your own existence. A dust like me (composed of O, H, N, Ca, K, Fe, C, Na, etc.) writing this lines is enough proof for me. I think you have problem with differentiating proofs from assumptions. Self-evident proofs will never survive self-denial. If Jesus did not insist, why should I.
