Barbaro doing well

Kentucky Derby (G1) hero BARBARO (Dynaformer) remains in stable condition after another good night, according to Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the New Bolton Center. The dark bay colt's right hind leg cast was changed on Wednesday and new radiographs were taken by the medical team.

"We took new radiographs, and they look good," Richardson explained. "No problems were evident."

Barbaro is recovering from a shattered right hind leg suffered at the beginning of the May 20 Preakness S. (G1). Two weeks ago, the sophomore developed a life-threatening case of laminitis in his left hind foot. The modified foot cast on that hoof is changed daily so the foot can be treated and monitored for signs of infection.

"Barbaro has a strong appetite, and he has been enjoying hand-picked grass and 'healthy snacks' daily," Richardson said.

The colt is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

He's doing well all things considered. They put him in a sling for some of the day to take pressure off his hind legs, and they say he has learned to sit like a dog. That is good because it takes pressure off his front legs.

As long as he looks alert and bright, keeps eating well, they have no intention of putting him down.

There is no way in the world this horse will ever race again, even before the complications. They're not even sure he will be able to breed "naturally" since they're not sure that the repaired leg could handle it. Hopefully he'll pull through. It wold be great to have his genes in future horses and hopefully there will be one that can match his abilities.

As said in the other answers he's doing fine and they are taking it day by day. As an equestrian (horse lover and rider)of 18 years I can tell you the chances of Barbero ever racing again are slim. Super slim. The end result will most likely be he'll be put out to pasture either for stud or sold and become a young equestrian's new best friend. In my old stable we had a former race horse he was moved b/c his owners were horrific people and they sent him to a stud farm. :(

day by day, so far so good.

""We took new radiographs, and they look good," said Richardson. "No problems were evident." In addition, the modified foot cast on Barbaro's left hind foot, which has laminitis, is changed daily so the foot can be treated and watched for signs of infection. "

Last I heard about a week ago, the outlook was bleak and they were considering putting him to sleep.
