Here's what you need to do. Invest in a grill pan. It's like a skillet but it has raised ridges running across the bottom of the pan. Your steak then sits up on the ridges instead of in the bottom of the pan. It's the closest you can get to grilling on your stovetop. You can find them at any mass merchandiser, i.e. Target. Probably find one for around $10 - $15. I would advise you to buy the best you can afford and look at it as a lifetime investment. I use mine a lot in the winter when it's too cold to grill outside.

Now that you have your grill pan. Cut a clove of garlic in half and rub it on your steak (always do both sides). Drizzle olive oil over steak, rub it in. Season with kosher salt and ground black pepper. Let sit 15 minutes or so while you heat your grill pan. When pan is hot, grill away my friend.

It may take a bit of practice but you will develop a feel for the thickness of the steak vs the amount of time for each side. I acquired this little info from an old time chef in Europe and it has paid dividend's throughout the years.

I found the best results for cooking a steak indoors was with the broiler. For a thick steak 4-6 minutes each side at 400 degrees make a great med-rare steak. It's almost as good as grilling outside. Yum

Yes...brown you steak on high heat both sides use butter..then turn down the heat and cook on each side for about 5 minutes..now that is for a thick steak..be aware of how done you want it..let it rest for at least 5 minutes after done so that juices go back into the steak..also mushrooms cooked in th leftover juices from steak are wonderful..just add a bit more butter and cook on high heat and keep them turned so they won't burn..put over steak...

I always cook it that way. I preheat a cast iron fry pan to a medium heat. Then, I add some canola oil, and a little bit of butter, and fry steak to preferred taste.
