Colour of skin depends on Melanin. Exposure to sun makes one go tan. As generation after generation live in a particular area, their gene gets affected. Hence people in tropicals get black colour - Like Africans, Indians, Particularly those closer to equator.

Actually, the question should be how did white people come about. It's been proven scientifically that the first humans were black. The hair, skin and eyes lightened over time as we moved to colder climates, didn't need so much pigmentation to protect us from the sun. I'm guessing all the hate mongers out there won't like this, but it's the truth.

That is hardly something that can be answered so easily.

Ok onelmO said it. But most of you won't believe it and you will phoo phoo it off.

For some of us...it's just a matter of "believing" the Bible. The rest won't get...until Christ returns.

The cradle of civilization is by the Euphrates, between Africa and the Middle East. So I would figure the first people were brown. Later as they moved out, I think it was the result of living for so long in the heat and sun...or the icey cold. The body changes to it's environment.

Phaeton (a young demigod of North Africa) attempted to drive his father Apollo's sun-chariot across the sky, but lost control and scorched the earth, creating a desert and darkening the flesh of those who lived on the African continent.
~ Greek Mythology

Through Ham (a name meaning "black") the blood of the Canaanites was preserved through the flood, as Ham had married Egyptus, a descendent of Cain. I.e., blacks represent the mark of Cain, a punishment by 'God'.

Melanin levels are nearly what scientists would expect from human adaptation to the sun. See this map and article at the Wikipedia.

It is clearly a result of human adaptation to sun intensity.

What is unclear, is the skin color of the earliest humans. But the best guess is that caucasians skin adapted by becoming lighter in order to collect more sun for the syntesis of Vitamin D. So, darker skin may very well have been more original.

Well, I think all humans evolved from dark-skinned peoples. The more exposure to the sun, the more melanin is released to pigment the skin. As humans gradually moved away from the Equator and started protecting their skin with clothing, the less exposure to the sun. Then, less and less melanin was needed to protect the skin. So, Presto-chango, you have white people. That's my opinion anyway. I probably could find the real answer, but it's really early and I want to go drink my coffee.

God while cooking a cake (of Humanity) forgot to switch the timer on. This resulted in some portion of it getting burnt. He cut them out and threw them into the African Continent. Though some flew off and landed in other parts of the World. This resulted in Blacks as we call them today. Then He realised what to do with the half-burnt portion. He threw them all over the Asian Continent and the Asia Pac. A lot from this huge chunk got spread while landing on the World and got in fact scattered all over the World. And the best portion of the cake he ate and relished. These are the so called 'White' people as we understand. Though white in colour they call the other two categories as 'coloured' for whatever reasons known best only to them !

i think the question should be how did different skin tone come about
because its thought that we all at one point came from central African when the world was joined as Pangaea and the tribes split across the lands as the lands split and divided
we would all have been black

We all evolved over time and are all at different stages of this evolution...I've also heard that darker skinned people evolved in a region with lots of sunshine. While lighter skinned people evolved in a region where it was cold and overcast.
