A person can live without food for quite some time, usually for many weeks.
The body will use its fat and protein stores (muscles) to help it survive.
If a person has a lot of fat stores (is very heavy), they will live longer than a person who has very little fat (very thin), so how long a person can survive depends a lot of the person. Of course, if you go without food for a few weeks, you will be very weak since you have been using your own muscles for energy.

Water is a different story. A person will die within 3-4 days without water. The size of the person really doesn't make much difference but conditions around the person does. For example how hot is it.

The survival rule of thumb is: 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food.

Death by dehydration is a nasty process involving incessent skin irritation, halucinations, and the swelling/ cracking of the tongue.

Humans can go without food for only about one week, provided they have plenty of water. Chances of death are great, unless this is done with gradual practice. Just like holding your breath takes practice.

Food you can go for a long time depending on your food stores.... like 15 days or more sometimes...
Water on the other hand is more like 48 hours before your kidneys shut down completely...

I think you can survive without water for 3 days and without food for about five. You need water more than food but you do need food.

Don't even think about starving yourself it is harmful.

Without food you can last for about 40 days until your body breaks down.

Without any type of fluid intake your body will breakdown within 3 days.

As far as the food goes, you'll last, but you need that water. If you don't die in a week, you'll be messed up badly and you don't ever want to mess with the kidneys.
