sorry, searching the web won't do it. It was a good question.

Here are some of the technologies that have been experimented with, and in some cases quite successfully implemented.

Hydroelectric (good old dams)
Geothermal
Dry-bed geothermal
Wind (a rapidly expanding technology)
Solar (huge recent breakthroughs in batteries are making this more and more practical)
Nuclear (work needs to be done on disposing or treating wastes, plants need to be safely run, new safer reactor designs need to be brought on line, but nukes can work is this is done)
Hydrogen Cells
Tidal Power (very successful and many coastal locations, most especially the 'bobbing ducks' methodm which powers several town in coastal Europe)
Ocean Thermal Conversion (the mother of all high yield methods, developed by TRW in the 70's, then put to sleep by the oil interests because it just was too promising)

Plenty of methods to make energy. The real issue in the over centralization of production, which just doesn't work. A great deal of energy is lost in transmission over distance in power lines. The real answer is localized production that is networked... small sources tapping whatever the local can best provide or support, backed up by a few higher profile facilities.

It's a different approach. But you can bet since it undermines existing monopolies, it's going to be a hard message to get out to the public.

But it can be solved. It involves public will... and, the tricky part, for powerful interests to cede their monopolistic control. Now that's more than a technical problem... greed's harder to conquer than technological obstacles.

OK, kinda sick and tired of whoever answers any kind of question like this getting around to blah, blah, blah...monopoly this and oil companies that. That is a bunch of crap! All the alternatives can be used in conjunction with each other.Vermont Power is even buying electricity from a dairy farmer who uses manure to produce electricity. All energy sources should be explored and exploited on local as well as national levels but please leave the conspiracy theories out of it. The fact is that any source of energy that can be produced AND provide a profit will
prevail. There are just way to many people looking for that next source of clean alternative fuel for big oil or big anything to remain in the way. It is a simple risk/reward formula that has driven our economy for decades.

When we run out of crude oil we will still have vast reserves of:
1. coal
2. fossil gases
3. oil sands of Canada
4. oil shale

Other alternative forms of energy include:
1. nuclear (fission now and fusion in the future)
2. wind
3. hydrothermal
4. solar
5. bio fuels including alcohol

Looking a bit deeper into the future we will tap tremendous quantities of methyl hydrates from the ocean.

Looking even deeper into the future will be the hydrogen economy.

And when you're a grand mum, your kiddies will drive around in cars that use artificial photosynthesis. They will run on water vapor from the air that will be split with catalyst into hydrogen and oxygen. Both gases will be fuels.

usually i think of it is with the aid of fact ability performance is something that anybody can do interior the fast term on an identical time as we artwork on making option ability decrease priced and available. i do no longer think of every person who's heavily interior the fairway marketplace believes that ability performance is in lieu of ability selections. this is a 2-fold physique of recommendations. we ought to continually create ability selections, yet we nonetheless ought to apply that ability effectively. there is not any longer probably lots of a difference between ability performance and ability conservation. performance is the ability in which we use much less (shelter) ability.

Solar, wind, tidal, geothermic, bio-diesel, ethanol, hydrogen fuel cells, lots of them but switching over to them will be a problem except for bio-diesel.
