i think some tourneys handle that differently. however, i believe most determine who plays in the final group by lowest score and then if ties for second it's the first player to post that score during the third round if a 72 hole event.

The definite answer is because he was first in on that score and played with Tiger in Rnd4, Ernie Els and Di Marco finished their 3rd round later than Sergio.
