Cats meow when they need attention. Nope, nope,.... I mean when they DEMAND attention! Have you noticed that they don't always need it, but ask for it anyway?

Purring may be used to communicate peaceful intentions and satisfaction with the present company. If a cat purrs in your presence, then it is saying that it is comfortable to be with you. Purring is also used in a variety of other situations, sometimes even in its moment of death.

If you would like to know more about cat communication then I would highly recommend Catwatching by Desmond Morris. Your public library ought to be able to get hold of a copy. The book answers many frequently asked questions about a cat's behaviour. Although the book was not written specifically for your age, it has been written to appeal to as many people as possible and I think you will be able to make use of it.

They meow through their voice box. They usually meow when they want your attentioon. My cat meow's and whines when he is outside too long, and is running to me and meowing at the same time. My other cat has a very low scratchy meow, which seems as if part of his voice box was injured........my husband found him one day hiding in our garage when he was a kitten......now he only meow's when he wants something from us.......Cats purr for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they will just purr in anticipation of something good they are going to get. Sometimes they will purr for no reason at all, but when they purr while you are holding them, its because they want to show you their affection.

by using their vocal cords.........just like we do...... and they can strain them too. One year we went to NJ from FL and our cat came along and sat in the back window meowing....It took us 8 hours to drive to the FL-GA border and he meowed all the way....he stopped about half way thru Georgia.......Looking in the rear view mirror, to see if he was asleep, I noticed he was still sitting in the window and opening and closing his mouth as if he was meowing...My son crawled in the back and said "Mommy, Orange lost his meow....". We took him to the vet when we got to NJ and the vet said he strained them and should be fine in a few days.........and YES he did it on the way home too............

In the same manner that a dog barks, a bear growls and a snake hisses...with their vocal cords and mouth...
