Are those units they are going to when they graduate?

yes jimmyc you are correct, the unit patch does signify the unit that the cadet will be going to after graduation, although the cadets will spend time the summers of Their 3rd and 4th years at the academy with these units,so as to prepare them for real military life /operations...kinda like a school/work program.

This is also practiced by the Naval Academy (I was excited to see the patch of the squadron I used to be in in the Marines). It is to honor those that are already serving. And while I have not paid attention to the Air Force Academy, I would assume that they are doing this also.
