My vet put him on Hill's Science Diet d/d dog food, and told me he can't have regular dog treats while we're treating his allergies. She told me I can give him carrots and things like that instead. However, he doesn't want the carrots....I've tried several times now. Does anyone know what else a dog on d/d can have? Hopefully there are some vets on here! (I'll call my own vet tomorrow, but my dog is jonesing for treats NOW!)

By the way....he does like some other veggies, and LOVES fruit. Would any non-meat work?

BTW...the vet told me that even Science Diet treats have meat protein that he shouldn't have. (The food he's on is prescription....not regular Science Diet...and they don't have prescription treats.) Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I hadn't made that part clear.

You can take the canned food and make little meatballs out of it and flatten them on a cookie sheet. then you bake them for a while until the are hard. Use a lower temp, like 300 degrees, and bake them for a few hours. You may need to cover them with foil so they do not burn.
These make cookies out of the food the dog can have. Some dogs will accept some of the dry kibble as a treat.
Concult your vet about any other things you may want to feed. You need to steer clear of any meats and grains.

Did you have an actual allergy test done(bloodwork)? If you did, then you shoud have a total list of all the foods & treats that your dog can have (the company that does the testing sends this to your vet). If you didn't & the dog is just allergic to something, your going to have a hard time finding a treat that won't set your dog off. The ingredients in the D/D have been broken down so small that your dog is able to digest them, without it making his system attack the free radicals in his body that cause the itching. But if you don't know exactly what food does this, then your stuck. My guess is that's why your vet reccommended carrots, most dogs love these, and I haven't heard of any having allergies to them. Have you tried baby carrots? They actually work better than the big ones that you cut up. they are sweeter & softer. My dogs love apples. You can try any fruits, but you will give him diarrhea if he eats to many so watch that. Never give a dog raisins either. There's something in them that can make them sick. You can also get an indestructable nylabone that is flavored. He can chew to his heart's content, but not have anything go into his system. You can buy a kong chew & put some cheese whiz inside, they love trying to get that out. There's peaniut butter paste also to stick in there. Hopefully one of these things will work for you.

Honestly you should give your dog any treats. And especially not ones made of meat. Most dogs are allergic to proteins, which are found in high amounts in meat and dairy products. If you really want this restricted diet to work you should stick to doctors orders. Try taking your pooch out for a walk, a car ride or playing ball with him for a while to get his mind of the treat and to tire him out. If you can't resist and do give him something (however I advise against it), make sure you remember what you gave him so you can tell your veterinarian. I know its hard to avoid giving treats, but sometimes you have to show a little tough love!

It depends. If you know what your dog is allergic to, then don't give him anything with that in it. If you don't know yet... well it's a little harder. Most allergies dogs have are to corn or meat, sometimes wheat. You can try giving him a little peanut butter, it's not bad for them and most dogs LOVE it. Just make suer he has plenty of water because it causes some seriously sticky mouth :). My dogs also like little pieces of cheese. See if he likes those, and good luck with finding out his allergies!

take some of the dog food and cover it in plain yogurt. or even the carrots. i think they also make science diet treats and if not try finding organic dog treats.

how about boiled chicken. I think that is an ingredient in science diet. Also look at the list of ingredients for clues.

It all depends on what the allergies are. Just don't give him grapes or onions....They are highly poisonous to dogs!
