A little while ago, I wrote about how my in-laws have a kitten which was attacked by a dog. The kitten loves life, and gets around by his front paws. We will be baby sitting him while the in-laws are on vacation. I can't believe the ignorance of some people. (have you ever noticed that many of the rude people on here don't want messages???) Below is what "torbaynewfs" said. It people like this who would abort the handicap babies born with birth defects too!! Terrible!

That is down right cruel to keep a kitten like that alive.

I have a boyfriend who has been a a wheelchair (broken neck) since he wuz 15. He WAS completely dependdant on other family members for the first (maybe) two years after the accident. Were both 38 now, I love and care for him deeply and I couldnt imagine my life w/o him. Had HE been a kitten/dog or even a fkin FISH wouldnt make the slightest difference. How can any1 in this day and age, with the technology we have, think that euthenization is a better idea for ANYTHING?!?!?

I can't believe this guy. If this is the only thing wrong with the kitten, the kitten seems to be in good spirits, and is still able to do other things then keeping the kitten alive is a wonderful thing. People become paralyzed from the waist down all the time and no one seems to think that it's cruel to keep the humans alive. Do people feel good about changing the diapers of a human loved one no matter the age? I doubt it but those that do well that's great for them.

I know I didn't respond to get a pat on the back. I responded because I genuinely care.

I work at a cat shelter and have seen MANY of these "handicapped" kittens, either by birth or injury!!!!!!! A cat is an animal that is designed to hunt.play, run, jump, and MOVE!!!
They can't rationalize the fact that they are handicapped!!!! They have the instinct to chase things and run, but they can't in this condition. How is that fair??? I have seen them several years down the road when people get tired of taking care of them or they start to rack up vet bills because the cat is now gettting bladder infections, arthritis from over use of the front limbs, the back end of the cat gets raw from urine scald....the problems go on and on. One day, it will not be a cute little handicapped kitten anymore!!!! It will be a handicapped cat that will have lots of problems.
In the wild, animals like this would not survive, and there is a reason for that.
The situation is a TAD different from aborting handicapped babies!!!!!!!! This is a kitten MAULED by a dog!!!!! Some loser let a kitten outside and it got mauled by a dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Were there any broken bones??? Was it all nerve damage??????
Was the kitten treated for a period of time with high dose steroids????????

The long term prognosis for this poor kitten is bleak. There will be medical problems and treatments galore. When can it be decided that the cat does not have a good quality of life??????
The cat cannot decide that for itself and look to humans to do that for them. If they end up in the care of people that feel better about themselves by taking care of a handicapped animal...than tthey are doomed to exist living a life that nature did not intend for them to live!!!!!

I am sure you all feel so good about yourselves every time you change it's diaper.
I will say it again...It is down right cruel to keep a kitten like that alive!!!!!

You only posted the question so a bunch of like minded do-gooders would pat you on the back for taking care of it!!!!!! Well, that ain't happening here!!!!!!!!

See, these are the do-gooders that can't seperate the kittens life from a child!!!! We were never talking about a KID here!!!!!!!!
I have a handicapped kid. Didn't abort it. We are talking about a KITTEN that was mauled. People need to be able to seperate the two because they are VERY DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure your family is trying to relieve the GUILT from letting a kitten outside!!!!!!! Stupid decision!!! But blaming the "big, bad dog" must make you feel better.

You have never said what the vet said about the kitten's condition after all the treatment it recieved from the mauling. Wonder why that is...................................................................

It is not cruel to keep the kitten alive AS LONG AS IT'S NOT IN PAIN. I understand what the vet tech is saying, I use to by one. However, a vet tech that i know has a dog w/ a spinal injury. He cannot use his back legs at all. He gets around w/ his front legs. He is not in pain and still enjoys life. Some ppl just don't want to deal w/ an injured animal. Takes a lot of time and sometimes money to care for them. If that is what u and u'r parents are willing to do, than go for it. Just remember, if at any time u notice the kitten not eating, or moving around, take it to the vet. I don't believe U'd purposely let this kitten live in pain. If u'r vet says it may be in constant pain, Then it may be time to let go. Good Luck w/ u'r little kitty. P.S. Hey Vet Tech...........if u read this, GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!

As long as it isn't in pain why not!!! I work at an animal shelter and have seen many animals like this that are happy. We had a kitten named pooh that had a broken back and we made her a sling to hold her back legs up and she hated it, we thought maybe she just had to get use to it but she never did,we took it off and she was so happy. We had a lab mix named true-luck that we think was hit by a car when he was tiny, he is blind and part of his brain is dead but he gets out in the yard with the rest of the dogs and runs and plays with them and has a great time with life. Good for your family for helping this baby out~!!!

Many people come on these forums just to stir up trouble. I report some of them for abuse if they display or recommend cruelty. But this answer is typical of a belief that many people have about handicapped animals. They think of pets as animated toys...Broken toys should be thrown away. Don't let it bother you too much, just be thankful that THIS kitten didn't fall into the hands of that type of person. HUGS. I love to read posts like yours. It goes a way toward restoring my view of the human race.

Now ask yourself would you really want to live a life in pain and suffering all of the time? Is there any quality in that life if you have to go through so much pain and agony? Is it really worth watching a loved one who can not live a life without not wondering when is going to be their last day because they can't do anything to stop the pain and suffering that they are enduring?

It depends on the situation and how the kitten is doing overall.

You have walked into a mine field without even knowing it!

This is a personal decision that your family has made to keep this kitten. There will be many people that don't understand their choice. And that is OK too.

I prefer all of my animals to have the best quality of life possible & sometimes that means knowing when to put them down. I make that decision for my animals and your family has to make that decision for your animals. There are no hard and fast rules here.

Handicapped animals "adjust" to their situations a lot faster and better than humans do.
I know of a dog that went totally blind from being run over by a car, and she was amazing! She adapted to her dark world very easily, and was very loved and cared for until the day she died.
How do you put a value on the life of a handicapped person??? Shold they be "put down?? I think not!

I KNOW. I couldn't believe how many people wrote that you should take the cat to thet vet like the accident had just happened. Loads of people don't seem to read the actual question, just scan it, think they get the gist and say some stoopid answer. You question was clearly, "kitty's had a rough time, how to i make it easy on him"

There are so many people on here who think that their horrible opinions deserve validation. Ignore them, and if this guy is a vet, his bedside manner sucks! maybe he should learn to realise that there's more to understanding ones pet than what you can read out of a text book.
