No filesharing programs are illegal. It´s when you share files like movies and music where a company or an artist owns the copyright that the sharing becomes illegal, unless you pay for the files and part of the money goes to the copyright owner. For example: you can share things you have written yourself, some classic music, freeware programs, links, your own photos and videos and anything that's explicably free to share.
If you download music and movies without paying for them, some people claim it's stealing, some say it's not. The laws tend to agree with the former. But people have shared music as long as there've been records around. I can copy a friend's CD collection, using a CD burner, a laptop, an mp3 player or an iPOD and then share my copies with others and nobody can do JS about it, but if you do it over the Net, you can be identified and prosecuted. IMO, as long as you DL for your own use and pleasure, there's no real difference.
As for viruses: There are NO viruses in LimeWire, BearShare etc in themselves, BUT when you DL them and accept filesharing, you open a backdoor straight into your computer. A firewall and good anti-virus protection is a must. Some of the downloadable files contain viruses, Trojans and Worms in particular. These files are either spread by bad guys or by ignorant people who don't scan their files properly. The last time I used LimeWire, I got 4 virus alerts in 1,5 hours. So be careful and protect your PC or you'll be very sorry.

Limewire its self is not illegal.
The potential for downloading viruses is great with Limewire but there are none in the program.

The program Limewire is not illegal. Any P2P program is not illegal, because it's sole purpose is not to share music. if you download music you dont own the rights to, then that's illegal. yes, if you download songs that you dont own the rights to, then you are stealing which is punishable by law. i've been using P2Ps for years, and the only time I get viruses is from programs I download. most mp3s dont have viruses, by a very few select do. most anti-virus programs will notify you if it is a virus.

The use of Limewire itself is not illegal. However, downloading songs from limewire may be illegal if someone owns the copyright.

hi,, when i first found Lime it said it was legal, most everything i've downloaded from that site are records i've bought over the yrs and lost , gave away, ruined etc....., so i dont think i'm stealing, plus there are some bootlegs and rare and out of print things that your not going to find for sale anyway and if it was my music that was lost to the ages i'd be glad someone was still hearing it :),,, if a file from lime comes as file corrupt, it'll say so and ask if you want to continue,,,

Stealing? No, just sharing. But instead of just sharing with your friend sitting next to you, you're sharing it with many other people over the internet.
Everything is virus -free.
